James King Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Serenity Meadows Memorial Park Funeral Home & Crematory - Riverview on Feb. 17, 2026.
James David "Jim" King, 80, passed away peacefully on February 17, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family.

Jim was born on March 26, 1945, in West Springfield, Massachusetts, where he grew up and met the love of his life and future wife, Sandra "Sandi" King. After graduating from Clark University, Jim proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War as a Captain and Huey helicopter pilot-an experience that shaped his lifelong sense of leadership, service, and dedication.

Jim and Sandi began their family with the birth of their son, Rob King, followed two years later by their daughter, Catherine King. Family was always central to Jim's life, and he worked tirelessly to provide for and support them.

Jim enjoyed a long and distinguished career in the transportation industry. He spent many years in leadership roles at Roadway Express and played an instrumental part in the planning of its spin-off, Roadway Package System (RPS). After RPS was launched, Jim served as the company's first Harrisburg Hub Manager and continued in additional leadership positions until leaving the organization in 1989.

Jim and Sandi later relocated to Tampa, Florida, where Jim concluded his professional career in a leadership role at WW Trucking, retiring in 2008. In retirement, they settled in Sun City, Florida, where they embraced an active and joyful life with friends, travel, and community. Jim especially cherished time spent on Martha's Vineyard-his favorite place in the world-where he and his family had shared summers since his childhood.

A man of many talents, Jim was known for his beautiful voice and love of music. He sang in the Sun City choir and performed with its barbershop quartet, bringing joy to all who heard him. Above all else, Jim treasured time with his family, who held the primary place in his heart during his retirement years.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Emma King, and his brother, John King. He is survived by his beloved wife, Sandra "Sandi" King; his son, Rob King, and daughter-in-law, Amanda King; his daughter, Cathie Cable, and son-in-law, Ron Cable; his sister, Ruth Morholt; grandchildren Austin King, Alexis Walker, Ryan King, and Cierra Doback and her husband, Geoff Doback; and great-grandchildren Amyla Wright, Anomi Edwards, and Mia Doback.

A Celebration of Life will be held on February 27, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. EST at Serenity Meadows Funeral Home, located at 6919 Providence Road, Riverview, Florida 33578. Following the service, family and friends will proceed together to Jim's burial site, where he will be laid to rest.

Jim will be remembered for his devotion to his family, his strong leadership, his service to his country, his love of music, and the kindness and warmth he shared with everyone fortunate enough to know him.

My deepest sympathies to all and Jim`s family and all of his friends. I remember JIM from 1986. He was a strong and knowledgeable leader who people gravitated to. I never knew that he was a helicopter pilot, and all of his other hidden talents. I only knew him as a solid individual with a great smile, sense of humor, and a passion for the work.
It is funny that this was 40 years ago and today I have the honor and pleasure to work. Praise his son.
God bless your entire family, and I pray that the Lord keeps JIM right at his side.
