After college, he went to join the United States Air Force and was stationed in San Antonio, Texas. He played football for the Air Force for four years. It was at this time he began to play guitar and he became very talented. He sang and played with many people all his life and all over the country. Everywhere he went, his guitar traveled too. While there, he met a young girl working in a coffee shop named Angelina, who would become his wife. They married in New Augusta, Mississippi in 1958.

They raised three kids, Robert, William and Lori. They were married for 24 years. After his first marriage, James met Betty Boles, who he married and lived with for 40 years until she passed in 2021. James and Betty traveled around the country in their motorhome enjoying many sites around the country. They went everywhere together, even to see the polar bears. They especially loved going to casinos all over the country during their travels. James had many friends who enjoyed getting together to play music and sing until the cows came home.

James was a member of Shriners, was a Mason and a member of the American Legion and First Baptist Church in Bossier City. He was an avid duck hunter and a member of Ducks Unlimited. On his hunting trips, his loyal Retriever named “Tar-Baby” was right by his side.

He is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Betty Kobs; step-daughter, Cheri Sanders; siblings, Harry Kobs, Donna Kobs, Kenny Kobs and grandson, Joseph Pacheco.
