James Layhee Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Hamilton Funeral Home, Inc. - Peru on Dec. 11, 2024.
James Harold "Jim" Layhee, 82, of Morrisonville, NY, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family.
Jim was born on October 18, 1942, to parents Charles and Edna Layhee in Dannemora, NY. Jim lived a life of service, community, and devotion to family.
Jim was a proud graduate of Saranac High School, where he was a star athlete on the varsity basketball team. His love for the game continued during his service in the U.S. Marine Corps, where he excelled as a basketball player and served as a Range Instructor at Parris Island, SC, during the beginning stages of the Vietnam War.
After his time in the Marines, Jim and his beloved wife, Wanda Layhee (Wanda M. Laundry) settled in Dannemora, NY, where they raised their family. Known affectionately (and sometimes not so affectionately) as "Lieutenant Layhee," Jim dedicated many years of his life to the Clinton Correctional Facility, retiring after 32 1/2 years of distinguished service. He was also deeply involved in his community, serving as a firefighter and was a Dannemora town trustee for 16 years. Jim was always striving to make a positive impact on the town he loved.
Jim was a family man through and through. He is survived by his devoted wife of 58 years, Wanda; his daughters, Leneè Layhee Gordon (David) and Lecole Cragle (Larry); and his cherished grandchildren, James Gordon (Michelle), Julia Gordon, Helen Cragle, Madison Cragle, and Jayne Gordon. He was predeceased by his beloved son, Lance James Layhee, whose memory he held dear.
Jim is also survived by his brothers, Chuck (Maureen) and Bill, his sister, Joann, and his sister in law, Sandi (Rich "Stan"). Jim was predeceased by his siblings Jack, Jeff, Rich "Stan", Cindy, Lisa, and his sister in law, Kimberly (Bill). Jim was also survived by many nieces and nephews.
One of Jim's proudest moments was completing the Honor Flight with his brother, Bill and his grandson, James accompanying him. This experience highlighted his enduring patriotism and love for his country.
Jim was also a skilled carpenter. During his retirement he was in the construction business with his long-time friends Vernon Malark and Tom Sweeney. Jim was an active member at American Legion Post 1619. Jim was a proud owner of several Ford Mustangs. As a member of the North Country Classic Car Club he got to spend time with his long-time friends, Jimmy Provost and Jerry Seymour. Jim was also a good bowler. If you have ever gone to a Plattsburgh State Cardinals hockey game, you have likely heard him cheering and jeering from his standing perch in the top row aisle.
Jim will be remembered for his integrity and his dedication to family and community. His legacy lives on in the hearts of all who knew him.
Calling hours will be held Sunday, December 15, 2024 from Noon to 2 PM at the Hamilton Funeral Home, 294 Mannix Road, Peru. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Monday, December 16, 2024 at 11 AM at St. James's Church in Cadyville with Rev. Christopher Looby, parish priest, celebrating. Military honors will follow, outside of church. Entombment will be in the spring in St. Paul's Cemetery in Bloomingdale.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Honor Flight and Dannemora Fire Department.
Semper Fidelis, Jim. Rest in peace.

I am saddened by his passing. I worked many years with him in Dannemora and in my union position we sometimes butted heads but he was always professional. We came to agreements way more often than not as we brought out the stubbornness in both of us. I retired early and moved on to another life and never saw him again and that´s my loss.
RIP Jim. You are missed.

So sorry of hearing the passing of Jim. I have fond memories of my classmate and of basketball, he being a great player and I cheering the team on. Condolences to all the family.
