James Allen McCabe "Jim", 66, a loving husband, father, and grandfather, passed away on February 9, 2023, at home surrounded by his family after a long battle with kidney disease.
Jim was born in Portland, M.E., on September 10, 1956, the son of Milton Joseph McCabe Jr. and Helen Y. McCabe (Laurion). Jim had been living in Rochester in his dream home since 2021.
Jim joined the Marine Corps in 1974 and served proudly for four years as a helicopter mechanic and he was honorably discharged in 1978. After leaving the military Jim became a mason by trade but also had a career working for Pratt & Whitney in North Berwick, M.E. and retired from UNH in 2009 as part of the facilities and maintenance crew.
Jim was an avid outdoorsman, he loved fishing and hunting and he earned the nickname, "the old buck hunter." You would often see Jim sitting up on Dry Hill Road, on the back roads of Durham and many other secret hunting spots always looking for the perfect buck. From late October through December, Jim was out in the woods, the place that he loved and felt most at home. Jim was the greatest of storytellers and always had a tale to tell from a day out in the woods or on the water.
Jim met the love of his life, Maureen Marshall, in 1979 and they married in 1980. They had two daughters and spent forty-two years together. Jim loved Maureen "his lovely bride" more than anything.
Jim is survived by his wife, Maureen Marshall of Rochester, N.H., his two daughters Kathleen King of Farmington, N.H., and her husband Nicholas King and Colleen McCabe of Dover, N.H. His brothers Terry McCabe of Lebanon, M.E., Thomas McCabe, and Timothy McCabe, as well as three grandchildren Makayla and James King of Farmington, N.H. and Warren James Helm of Dover, NH. Jim is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and loving cousins. Jim never had a biological son, but found one in James Hafner, who he enjoyed many hunting trips and chats with over the years and loved dearly. Jim was predeceased by his mother, Helen Y. McCabe and his father, Milton Joseph McCabe Jr. Also, by his brothers, Milton Joseph McCabe, III and Jeffrey R. McCabe.
A memorial service with military honors will be held on Thursday, February 16, 2023, from 4pm to 7pm at Grondin Funeral Home, 177 North Main Street, Rochester, N.H.
