Mr. McCallen was born May 21, 1949 in Omagh, County Tyrone, Ireland. He was the son of James & Agnes (O'Neill) McCallen.
James grew up in Yonkers, New York. After graduating high school, he enlisted in the United States Army. He served as a Sergeant and was an Artillery Surveyor. He received the National Defense Service Medal and the Army Expert Marksmanship Badge. Mr. McCallen was honorably discharged on August 12, 1971. After being discharged, he served as a firefighter for over 20 years with the City of Yonkers. After he retired, he moved to Franklin, New York then to Palm Coast, FL.
Mr. McCallen attended Santa Maria del Mar Catholic Church. He enjoyed traveling to Medjugorje where he was a tour guide and lead several mission trips there for years. Mr. McCallen also enjoyed making Rosaries and would donate them to people, churches, and schools.
James leaves his two children, Sheila (Emmett) Rowley of Newburgh, NY and Keith (Melissa) McCallen of Proctor, WVa; his four grandchildren, McKenna, Teagan and Colin Rowley, and Hailey McCallen; his three sisters, Mary (Jack) Tobin of Palm Coast, FL., Brigid Ann Simoni of New Windsor, NY., and Rose Allis of Beacon, NY. He also leaves several nieces, nephews and extended family in Ireland.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Terrance and John McCallen
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11:00AM on Saturday, October 22, 2022, at St. Joachim Church 51 Leonard Street, Beacon, followed by interment and military honors at the St. Joachim Cemetery, 325 Washington Avenue, Beacon. A Memorial Service will also be held in Palm Coast at a later date.
