James "Jim" F. McCarthy Jr., 86, of
Lebanon, NJ, passed away on Thursday, January 23, 2025, at the Hunterdon Medical Center in Raritan Twp., NJ. Born in Staten Island, NY, on July 7, 1938, Jim spent his early years there before settling in
Lebanon, NJ, where he lived for 58 years.
Jim was the beloved husband of Marion F. Rempuszewski McCarthy, with whom he celebrated 63 years of marriage. He was the son of the late James F. McCarthy Sr. and Veronica McGurrin McCarthy, and was predeceased by three siblings Sharon Roberto, William McCarthy, and Thomas McCarthy.
Jim was the proud father of six children: Judith McCarthy of Clinton, NJ, James McCarthy III and his partner Barbara Merlo of Washington, NJ, Timothy McCarthy and his wife Deanna of King of Prussia, PA, David McCarthy of
Lebanon, NJ, Brian McCarthy and his wife Michelle of Fayetteville, NC, and Susan McCarthy of Bloomsbury, NJ. He was a devoted grandfather to Michael McCarthy, Cody McCarthy, Casey McCarthy and his wife Karly, Alexandra McCarthy, Jason Boyle, and Josh Auch and his wife Haley and a cherished great-grandfather to Cillian McCarthy, Asia McCarthy, Indie Boyle and Joseph Auch. He is also survived by several nieces and a nephew.
A proud graduate of Seton Hall University with a Bachelor's degree in Psychology, Jim had a long and fulfilling career at AT&T, working at various locations including Newark and Bedminster, NJ. Jim was an active member of his community, giving his time to numerous organizations and causes. He was a founding member of the FIDES Club, a long-time member of Our Lady of Lourdes in Whitehouse Station, and an engaged participant in the Lebanon Seniors Club. Jim served as Chairman of the Lebanon Borough Planning Board for many years and was a dedicated member of the Board of Education. In 2007, he was honored to serve as Grand Marshall of the Lebanon Borough Fourth of July Parade.
Jim had a deep passion for history, especially the Revolutionary War, and loved sharing his knowledge with others by teaching history classes. He was also an avid genealogy enthusiast and enjoyed exploring his family's roots. In addition to his historical pursuits, Jim was an avid reader, particularly fond of mystery novels. He cherished family gatherings, holiday celebrations-particularly Christmas-and the many trips he and his wife enjoyed during their retirement years.
Jim's legacy of love, service, and commitment to his family, faith, and community will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. He will be greatly missed, but forever remembered.
Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, January 29, 2025, from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Scarponi-Bright Funeral Home, 26 Main Street,
Lebanon, NJ.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, January 30, 2025, at 10:00 AM at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 390 County Road 523, Whitehouse Station, NJ. Following the Mass, Jim will be laid to rest at Immaculate Conception Catholic Cemetery in Annandale, NJ.
