West Family Funeral Services & Memorial Park - WeavervilleAsheville - Jeffrey William Byers, 78, passed away on October 20, 2025. He is survived by his loving wife, Judy Hart Byers; two sons, Jon and Greg; daughters-in-law Jazmine, Brittany; and five grandchildren, Mackinzie, Camden, Lilli, Jordan and Hudson; his sister, Kathy Kunkel, (George and Lindsey); in-laws, Eloise, Luan, Hal, Brian, Lynn; and many nieces and nephews. Jeff was predeceased by his parents, Robert and Elizabeth Byers.
Jeff was born on March 6, 1947, in Lancaster, PA. He spent his childhood in Lancaster and Key West, FL. Graduating from Franklin & Marshall College in 1969 with a degree in Chemistry and received his MBA from Seton Hall University in 1980.
Jeff was a chemist during his career. He believed in the importance of education and taught classes at Pitt Community College. He also served on East Carolina University’s Medical Institutional Review Board - for the protection of human research subjects.
As an avid athlete, he ran in the New York City Marathon as well as competed in multiple triathlons.
Married to Judy for 51 years, his most notable accomplishment, whom he met on a blind date. He always said it was the last blind date he was ever going on!
Jeff loved spending time with his family, especially beach vacations. He also enjoyed reading about the Civil War and cheering for his favorite sports teams, which included his sons and grandkids teams.
Jeff was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Asheville and a former member and Elder at Peace Presbyterian Church in Greenville, NC.
The family wants to thank the caregivers at Pisgah Manor and Elderberry Healthcare for their compassionate care for Jeff in his final years.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in his memory to The Michael J. Fox Foundation or a church of your choice.
The funeral service will be at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 8th at First Presbyterian Church, 40 Church St, Asheville, NC 28801 with Dr. Patrick Johnson officiating. There will be no formal visitation service.
