HENDERSONVILLE – James Wayne Merrill, age 87, of Hendersonville, passed away October 19, 2025, at the Solace Center.
James was born on March 24, 1938, in Branford, Ontario to the late James and Alice Holt Merrill. He is also preceded in death by his brothers, Harold and Raymond; and sisters, Marcella, Mary and Betty Lou.
Though James graduated with a degree in Engineering, his career began in insurance with Mutual of Omaha and spanned years of success, earning a place in the President’s Circle and becoming a General Managing Agent. He then became a financial consultant to Americans Living Abroad.
An adventurous spirit, James loved flying, scuba diving, and traveling in Europe. He was Fleet Captain at Marina Pacifica, Long Beach, CA Yacht Club, and President of Warbirds West Co. He did many airshows including aerobatics and formation flying. Some of the WWII planes he flew were the Canadian Harvard Mark IV, Ryan PT22 and the Stearman.
Jim was charismatic, beloved and larger than life. His wit was sharp as it was understated. He never had to raise his voice to make you laugh – just needed the perfect line, perfectly timed. No matter where he went, he had a way of lighting up the room – people were naturally drawn to him.
James is survived by his wife of 32 years, Karen A. Merrill. He is also survived by his brother-in-law, Mark Geslicki and wife Consuelo; nephews and nieces, Rob Harrison and wife, Cindy; Ricky Merrill and Judy Merrill; and grandnieces and nephews, Michele, Nicole and JR Harrison and Krista Cooper.
A service will be held at a future date, celebrating James Merrill’s life.
