Walter Kawalec Jr., age 87, formerly of Sayreville, passed away Saturday, October 18, 2025 in Greensboro, NC, surrounded by his loving family. Born in South Amboy, Walter lived in Sayreville for 57 years before moving to NC, 4 years ago. He worked in education for 43 years, earning his undergraduate degree from Seton Hall University, and his Master Degree in Education from Trenton State College. As a devoted teacher he taught French for Sayreville War Memorial High School in Sayreville and then Latin for Mount Saint Mary Academy in Watching.
As a devout Catholic, Walter was a communicant of Our Lady of Victories RC Church in Sayreville where he was an active member of the St. Vincent de Paul Society. He was a member of the OLV Knights of Columbus and also served as a Eucharist minister at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick for over 20 years. One of his greatest joys was meeting Pope John Paul II in Rome (and later humbly loving that he had the amazing opportunity to meet a Saint!).
Ever proud of his Polish heritage, Walter was a member of and accordion player for the Jester's Polka Band. He loved playing traditional Polish music for family and friends. Walter had a kind and calming spirit and was a true gentleman. He will truly be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
Walter is predeceased by his parents Walter and Adele, his sister Dorothy Zarzyczny and by his beloved daughter Laura Schubert.
Surviving are his cherished wife of 63 years, the former Constance Kulczynski, his children Donna Cardaneo and her husband James, Joseph Kawalec and his wife Jeannine, his grandchildren Erik Schubert and his wife Haley, Emily Schubert and her fiancé Brett Johnson, Kassia O'Brien and her husband Charles, William Kawalec, Jacob Kawalec, Sophia Adele Kawalec, his great-grandchildren Lillian and Liam Schubert and a host of other relatives and friends who will miss him dearly.
A memorial visitation will be held on Thursday, October 30th from 4:00pm to 7:00pm at the Carmen F. Spezzi Funeral Home 15 Cherry Lane, Parlin, NJ. A memorial funeral Mass will be offered on Friday, October 31st at 10:00am at Our Lady of Victories RC Church in Sayreville. Burial will follow at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Parlin.
