James Stewart "Jimmy" McFarland of North Middletown passed away on Sunday, November 3, 2024, at the age of 93. He was in his home in and was surrounded by his children. He was born on August 12, 1931, in Paris, KY to Earl and Edith Bowles McFarland and was their last surviving sibling. Jimmy was preceded in death by his wife Jerry Ann Jackson McFarland and two grandsons Clay and Clayton McFarland. Jimmy is survived by his four children, Gary (Martha) McFarland of Paris, KY, Greg (Kathy) McFarland of Duluth, GA, Jeff (Sarah) McFarland of North Middletown, KY and Julie McFarland of North Middletown, KY. He is also survived by his grandchildren Kayla Coburn, Kirsten Lombardo, Wes McFarland, Hunter McFarland, Megan Kavanagh and Anna Kate McFarland. "Old Papaw" is also survived by the lights of his world, his eight great-grandchildren.
Jimmy was a Korean War veteran and was a retired electronic technician at the Bluegrass Army Depot (Avon). After retirement he enjoyed woodworking that he referred to as "making sawdust". He was a member of the North Middletown Christian Church and served in the capacities of Elder, Deacon, Property Chair and was an Elder Emeritus. For sixty-five years, he served the North Middletown community with the North Middletown Volunteer Fire Department. One of his most notable accomplishments during his time with the fire department was being Department Chief when the current fire station was constructed. But, undoubtedly his finest achievement in the fire service was passing on the fire service legacy to his children and grandchildren, spanning three generations. He also served as a training officer training many firefighters throughout central Kentucky. Jimmy also volunteered his time during mission trips to help in underprivileged areas throughout several states, as well as in Honduras. He was a scoutmaster with the
Boy Scouts of America, helping to mentor the young men of Troop 61, in North Middletown. He was named a Kentucky Colonel by former Governor Wallace Wilkinson.
Funeral service, with full firefighter rights, will take place on Thursday, November 7, 2024, at the North Middletown Christian Church, 1976 Thatchers Mill Road in North Middletown. The service will begin at 11am., with burial to follow in the North Middletown Cemetery. Visitation will take place at the church on Wednesday, November 6, 2024, from 5pm until 8pm.
