James Jay McLaughlin, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and servant of the Lord, passed away peacefully on January 2, 2026, in
Burlington, North Carolina, at the age of 87. Born on April 24, 1938, in
Las Vegas, New Mexico, James lived a life marked by creativity, faith, and love for his family.
James attended Highland High School in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and furthered his education at The University of New Mexico. His early years were spent serving his country with honor in the United States Navy. After his service, he pursued his passion for the arts, establishing his own art studio and worked for Coca-Cola. An avid artist and poet, James found joy in expressing himself through his creations.
At the age of 42, James accepted Christ at Mountain Christian Church, a decision that profoundly shaped the rest of his life. He was ordained as a minister at Calvary Chapel in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and later became a missionary pastor in Uganda, East Africa, where he dedicated himself to spreading the word of God and serving those in need.
James married the love of his life, Sonja "Sunny" Holloman McLaughlin, on December 11, 1980, in Cedar Crest, New Mexico. Together, they built a loving family and shared a deep commitment to their faith and community.
Preceded in death by his parents, James Valentine McLaughlin and Beatrice McLaughlin, his brother Sandy, sisters Myra and Bonnie, and children Donald Kelly and John Massegee, James is survived by his beloved wife Sunny McLaughlin; his brother Robert McLaughlin and wife Diana; his sister Patti Hykes and husband Rick; and his children Stacy McLaughlin, Stephani "Sam" Malpass, and Nicole Blouin. He also leaves behind cherished grandchildren Michael McLaughlin, Katie McLaughlin, Morgan McLaughlin, Mathew McLaughlin, Elizabeth Gergrich, Zachary Wells, Brittney Blouin, Jordan Blouin, Jacob Blouin, and Daniel Kelly, as well as one great grandchild Troy Tirado.
James will be remembered for his unwavering faith, his artistic spirit, and his profound love for his family. His legacy lives on in the hearts of those who knew him and in the many lives he touched throughout his journey.
