I have no idea how this message found my email. But I read enough of the bio to confirm that this is MY James Dixon McLean. We were friend at U of Chicago, in the same graduate program (Human Development). I would say I was probably his best friend, since he was a loner. I remember his room way up in a tower. Also did visit him once or twice in Knoxville, where I had relatives. At one time, driving from NYC to San Diego, JDM helped us pick out a new car, when our old Volvo developed a critical engine problem. Mostly remember he lived on a lot with overgrown bushes and had cats. For the record, I later got a PhD in Epidemiology from UC San Diego, but am Lon since retired now.

I was a friend of Dickson at University of Chicago, 1970-1973, where we were fellow students. I even visited him in Knoxville one spring vacation. I did a search on his name today because I will be in the Knoxville area this spring and thought we might get together to reminisce. I regret that that will not be possible. My love to Dickson and his family.

I am not sure how to start, since I do not know Sandy, Dickson's wife, and I have not seen any of his family for well over 40 years. Sadly, I read of Dickson's passing in the Fulton High alumni news. Then I went to the News Sentinel to search, and found the obituary. I am so glad I did.
Dickson and I were in High School Together, graduated together and started UT together. After he was back from his Army service and had gotten his degree from Chicago, we met a few times and resumed our enjoyment of hiking in the Smokies together. I have many great memories.
I tried several times to find Dickson in recent years, but failed to do so. Now I am so sorry that I did not try harder. I am so happy to learn that Dickson had a wife to be with, and I so much enjoyed reading how much he meant to others. All true.
The one thing that I remember but I did not see mentioned is that Dickson had a great, carefully crafted, sense of humor. I will never forget him.
I will remember you in my prayers.

A thinker dies, but his thoughts are beyond the reach of destruction. Men are mortal, but ideas are immortal. It sounds as if Dickson has made his mark on the world many times over. Most importantly he has made a mark on your world. My thoughts and prayers are always with you.
Love you,
Mary Miller

This is a message for my friend Emily Jones.
Emily, it encouraged me a great deal to see you at Dickson's memorial service. I am so glad that someone I grew up with since grammar school was there to console me. Having you there made me feel much better.
It was very thoughtful of you to come all the way from where you live to show how much you respected and admired Dickson.
Sincerely,
Dan Lundy

Best wishes to you as you grieve the loss of a great man and a dear friend. I was a student of Dickson's in the early 90's. For a few years, we spent a good amount of time with each other. Time well spent for me.

I was very saddened to learn of Dr. McLean's passing. I was a student in one of his first classes at UT, either in '74 or '75. We explored a lot in that class. He allowed us great leeway in choosing what to talk about without allowing us to simply "BS". My paper was on the effects of strip mining on the people of Southern Appalachia. I still have a copy of it somewhere, I hope.
Dr. McLean's time on earth meant something.

I am sorry to hear of Dr. Mcleans' passing. I was a student of his in the early 1980's. I remember his love of motorcycles, so much so he would ride in the snow to tell the class to go home because the snow. He was a great person and I learned much from him.

Sandra, I wish I could say some wonderfully eloquent thing to give you solice. Actually, Cousin was a dear friend before we were teens and except for his ocassional visits back here, we didn't see each other. Tom S. and the twins became the "contacts". I am pleased to know he married you and of course we saw what a wonderful, devoted partner you were to him. Love from us in Cape Carteret. John McLean
