James Martin Mitchell Jr., 87, of Duncan and formerly of Laurens, and husband of the late Linda Kaye Thomason Mitchell, passed away on Sunday, June 1, 2025, at Richard M. Campbell Veterans Nursing Home.
Born in Columbia, SC on September 21, 1937, James was the son of the late James Martin Mitchell Sr. and Bonnie Watts Mitchell. A proud veteran of the United States Air Force, James worked at Southeastern Freight in Columbia, SC before retiring from Rudolph Penland in Gray Court. He was a member, former church treasurer and served on the cemetery committee at Chestnut Ridge Baptist Church in Laurens. In recent years, he attended Poplar Springs Baptist Church in Moore with his family. James was known affectionately as "Water" by his friends at the Golden Corral. He had a love for nature, he enjoyed bird watching and ensuring the local birds were well-fed with his carefully placed bird seed. His love for southern gospel and country music, especially the tunes of Guy Penrod, was well-known and often shared with those around him. Above all, James cherished the time spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchild, who brought immense joy to his life.
He is survived by two sons, William Thomas "Tommy" Mitchell (Veronica "Roni") of Duncan and Dennis James Mitchell (Kellie Tompkins) of Cypress, TX; grandchildren, Ethan Paul Mitchell, Mikayla Elaine Mitchell, Riley Stewart Mitchell, and Shaunel Sibert; great grandchild, Ryder Maverick Murray; and sister-in-law Carolyn Mitchell.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was predeceased by siblings, Phyllis Mitchell Berry and David Anthony Mitchell, Sr.
A graveside service will be held on Friday, June 6, 2025, 11:00 AM at Chestnut Ridge Baptist Church Cemetery conducted by Rev. Alex D. Henderson with Military Honors.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 7, 2025, 11:00 AM at Poplar Springs Baptist Church in Moore, SC conducted by Rev. Ken Forrester. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Chestnut Ridge Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, 499 Chestnut Ridge Rd. Laurens, SC 29360
