James Robert Mitz, known affectionately as Jim to his friends and family, passed away peacefully on December 9, 2024, in his hometown of
Evansville, Indiana, where he was also born on December 2, 1939. His journey through life was marked by devotion to his country, his work, and the love he shared with those around him.
Jim was a proud graduate of Central High School's class of 1958, where he formed many lifelong friendships. After graduation, he answered the call to serve his country as a U.S. Marine, a commitment that instilled in him a sense of discipline and honor that he carried throughout his life. Upon returning to civilian life, Jim dedicated 40 years to his career as a boilermaker, a trade that not only showcased his skill and work ethic but also allowed him to contribute significantly to the community he held so dear.
In addition to his professional life, Jim was an active member of his high school reunion group, ensuring that the bonds formed in youth remained strong and vibrant throughout the years. His dedication to this role was a testament to his belief in the enduring power of friendship and many shared memories.
Jim's love for the outdoors and travel was a defining aspect of his life, especially the adventures he embarked on with his late wife, Lavon, in their cherished motorhome. Together, they explored the country, creating a tapestry of memories that Jim would fondly recount to anyone who had the pleasure of his company. He was a man who never met a stranger, possessing the rare gift of being able to strike up a conversation with anyone he met, making friends easily and leaving a lasting impression on all.
As a devoted husband to Lavon Jim showed unwavering love and commitment, particularly during his wife's illness. Through every challenge and setback, he stood by her side with compassion and strength, offering constant care and support. Jim's selflessness and dedication to her well-being was a testament to the deep bond they shared throughout their marriage. His love and care given to Lavon will forever be remembered by those who witnessed his devotion to her and the beautiful partnership they built together.
Jim was also an avid gambler who loved the thrill of the game and often found himself on the winning side. Whether in Vegas, Reno or a small local casino, he had an uncanny ability to pick the right slot machine every time, leaving others in awe of his luck and timing. His winning streaks were legendary, always managing to hit the jackpot when least expected. His remarkable success at the slot machines became part of his charm, and he will be remembered for this enthusiasm, wit and the thrill he brought to those around him in those moments. Beyond the games, Jim will be remembered for his generous spirit, sense of humor and living life to the fullest every single day.
His friends and family were the cornerstone of his life, and though he is predeceased by his beloved wife Lavon, his siblings Johnny Mitz, Henrietta Steinhauser, Geraldine Hendrickson, Beverly Schneider, Barbara Tragar, Margaret Cravens, and his parents John and Oda Mitz, he leaves behind a legacy of love and laughter with his many nieces and nephews from both near and far, including those from Evansville, Jeff (Sue) Cravens, Greg (Donna) Cravens, John Cravens and Tom (Susan) Cravens, as well as William Severse and his many special friends. His presence will be deeply missed.
Jim's life was one of unwavering loyalty, boundless enthusiasm, and a warmth that drew people to him. His stories, often filled with humor and wisdom, will continue to echo in the hearts of those who knew him. As we bid farewell to James Robert Mitz, we celebrate a life well-lived, a journey well-traveled, and a man well-loved.
