James Moon Obituary

MOON, James Edward, age 89, of Lawrenceville, Georgia, passed away on Wednesday, August 6, 2025. James' age was a matter of dispute between himself, the State of Georgia, and the Federal Government. When he was 75 years old, he admitted to misleading the government about being 16 years old while he was merely 13, in order to acquire a driver's license. Even though it caught up with him later, he was able to correct his age on his driver's license and continue driving. James was the owner of Moon's Lawn and Garden Nursery and many other successful businesses. During this time, he developed a reputation for having an impressive work ethic that often dwarfed those decades younger than him. Prior to his career as an entrepreneur, James worked for General Motors for 31 years. He also proudly served as a Gwinnett County Sheriff's Deputy for six to eight years. While serving, James was an integral part of rooting out corruption within the Sheriff's Office by working with the GBI. During this time, other deputies were slain while attempting to root out corruption under the sheriff, including James' partner. James is preceded in death by his parents, John Henry "Pawpaw" and Mary Lucille "Mamaw" (Cochran) Moon, and his beloved wife, Dorothy Jane (Wesley) Moon, who passed away in 2022. The couple first eloped on September 4, 1951, a date which was often disputed since they married around midnight-one would celebrate on September 4th, the other on September 5th. James is once again eloping with his lifelong sweetheart on the streets of Heaven. James is survived by his children, Teresa (Michael) Hauck, Terry (Rita) Moon, and Tina (Billy) Wood. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Jennifer (Octavius) Davis, Niki (Vince) Deckers, Corey (Heather) Wood, Timmy Brady, Jesse (Mary) Burrell, and Cody Wood, as well as his most prized descendants: 13 great-grandchildren. A Funeral Service will be held at 3:00 PM on Saturday, August 9, 2025, in the Chapel of Tim Stewart Funeral Home in Lawrenceville, with Pastor Caleb Stallings officiating. Interment will follow at Gwinnett Memorial Park in Lawrenceville. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make a donation to Maranatha Baptist Church, 3340 Five Forks Trickum Rd. SW, Lilburn, GA 30047. Visitation will be held on Friday, August 8, 2025, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM and on Saturday, August 9, 2025, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM at the funeral home.
