James Moore Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by McCulla Funeral Home on Dec. 15, 2025.
James Walter Moore, aged 90 passed away on December 14, 2025, in Morgantown, WV. Born on March 13, 1935, to the late Carl M. Moore and Nell Carpenter Moore, James lived a full and vibrant life characterized by service, family devotion, and a deep love for the soil and nature.
James was a respected U.S. Navy veteran who honorably served his country during the Korean War. His courage and dedication were hallmarks of his character, traits he carried forward into his civilian life. After serving, he returned home to build a life enriched by work, family, and community.
He is survived by his loving wife of 70 years, Clara Jean Carpenter Moore, who, along with James, was a fixture at West Virginia University basketball games, hardly missing a game in nearly half a century with their cherished season tickets. Together, they celebrated victories and weathered defeats, forever bonded by their shared passion. The joy of his life was his family, including his daughter, Paula Herbst; sons, Bruce Moore with spouse Louise, and Byron Moore with spouse Pamela. James was a pillar of support and inspiration to his beloved grandchildren, Christopher, Benjamin, Justin (Jen), Joshua (Denise), and McClellan Herbst, and his adored great-grandchildren, Haley, Hanna, and Luke who brought great delight and pride to his later years.
Predeceased by his siblings Emily, Gene, Bill, and Johnny, James is remembered for emulating the courage that defined his brothers' lives and carrying on their legacy of strength. His presence as an elder brother was a source of wisdom and consolation to his family.
Professionally, James was steadfast and reliable, mirroring the commitment he showed his country. In his free time, he was a master gardener, often sharing the bounties of his harvest and the beauty of his blooms with friends and neighbors, and was an avid fan of numerous sports, finding joy in the camaraderie and excitement they brought.
Friends and acquaintances will have the opportunity to honor the remarkable life of James Walter Moore at McCulla Funeral Home on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, from 10 am until the funeral service at 11 am. Full military honors will be conferred by Westover VFW #9916 and the Navy Funeral Honor Guard. Following the service interment will take place at Beverly Hills Cemetery.
