James Moore Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Rhoney Funeral Home, Inc. - Lewiston on Dec. 20, 2025.
Dr. James P. Moore ("Jim"), 91, passed away on December 15, 2025. He is survived by his sisters Mary McAnulty and Ann Moore, his brother Dick Moore (Marty Crowder), his daughters Beth Pascali (Umberto Pascali), Anne Moore, and Cathleen Moore (Toby Mordkoff), his step-children Elizabeth Kellick Touroul (Gerard Touroul), Robert B. Kellick (Amy Kellick), Carol Kellick Palillo (Anthony Palillo), Diane Kellick Palmer (Matthew Palmer), his ten grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Jim was predeceased by his brother, Fr. Thomas Moore, his brother-in-law, Tom McAnulty, his son, William (Billiam) Norman Moore and his wife Phyllis Kellick Moore.

Born in Niagara Falls to William Norman and Margaret Scherer Moore on July 20, 1934, Jim had two brothers, Tom (predeceased) and Dick, and two sisters, Mary and Ann.

To escape rationing during World War II and provide the children with a wonderful spot to spend their summers, the family built a cottage in Silver Bay, Ontario. Jim never forgot the worst sunburn he ever got while helping his Uncle Eddie build another cottage in the lot next door. Those cottages continue to be a center of summer family life for the Moore and Scherer families to this day.

Jim attended Bishop Duffy High School along with many lifelong friends, including Jimmy Glynn and his cousin Joe Scherer with whom he was particularly close. After high school, he attended Niagara University. Jim was good at chemistry, but did not want to make it his career like his father did. He often told the story of a heart-to-heart talk that he had while at Niagara in which his father told him that he was good with people and should become a doctor. From that point on, Jim set his sights on medical school. Jim needed a sport to get into medical school, so he tried his hand at track. The first day out, the team tested him by saying "just follow that guy wherever he goes". Jim had long legs and good lungs but could barely keep up and thought he might not qualify. To everyone's amazement, the "newbie" kept up with the team's star cross-country runner. And that was how Jim became a long-distance runner on the Niagara University track team. Tragically, the year that Jim graduated from Niagara and was accepted into the SUNY at Syracuse medical school, and the year that his brother Tom graduated from high school, their father died of a massive heart attack. This inspired Jim's choice to become an internist with a specialization in cardiology.

In 1959, Jim married Margaret Mary Banks, whom he had met at Niagara University where her father was a professor of mathematics and chemistry. The first nine years of their marriage revolved around Jim completing his medical training and growing a family. After Jim graduated from medical school in 1960, they moved to Cincinnati, OH for his internship where Elisabeth (Beth) Marie was born, and then to Mather's Airforce Base in CA where he served as a Captain in the Air Force and Anne Marie and William (Billiam) Norman were born. They then moved to the Washington DC area for Jim to carry out an Internal Medicine residency and Cardiology fellowship where Cathleen Marie was born. In 1968 they moved back to Niagara Falls to be closer to family, and Jim started a practice with his college friend, Dr. Robert J. Brennan.

Jim was known for his wonderful bedside manner and deep personal commitment to his patients and the community. In the 1970's he became known as "Dr. Hypertension" because he led a program to heighten awareness of the dangers of undetected high blood pressure,
especially within the African-American community, and provide treatment. Jim was proud that the program was able to screen 20,000 people in one year. Jim was also a leading light at Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center and held many leadership positions there. At one point he was simultaneously Chief of Medicine, Chief of Cardiology, and Director of the Internal Medicine Residency program. He was instrumental in bringing echocardiography to Niagara Falls. Jim was honored with an honorary doctorate from Niagara University for the wonderful work that he did for the city and the community.

In the late 1980s Jim and Margaret were divorced. Soon after, Jim found the love of his life, Phyllis Kellick. They were married in 1990 and spent 35 wonderful years together until her passing on September 25, 2025. They shared a love of golf and travel but also enjoyed simple
everyday things like playing cards and hosting friends for soup dinners. Jim summed up his 35-year marriage with Phyllis this way: "Most of all we were able to enjoy life together." When Jim married Phyllis, he had the joy of marrying into a vibrant family. He embraced his role as stepfather wholeheartedly, becoming a steady presence in his four stepchildren's lives.

He enjoyed many holidays in North Carolina, especially the huge Thanksgiving festivities where Billiam and cousin Dave would join, and after dinner "kids" of all ages would play games like Apples to Apples and Left Right Center for giant piles of quarters.

Jim adored each of his ten grandchildren. His "buttons would pop" with pride when he talked about their many and varied accomplishments. He saw the uniqueness in each of them and encouraged them to cultivate it and follow their passions. When they were little, he would sit with them for hours with the patience of Job. He loved to exclaim "I don't believe you!" when they cried to try to coax them into laughter. And they, like all their parents before them, knew that anytime anyone got hurt, the first solution to the problem according to their Grandpa/Dad, Dr. Moore, was to "soak it".

Jim created countless beautiful memories with the people in his life. He lived his Catholic faith deeply and truly which manifest as kindness and generosity. He will be missed.

A celebration of his life will be held on Monday January 19, 2026. The family will receive friends and family at 10AM at St. Peter's Catholic Church, 620 Center St., Lewiston, NY, followed by a 10:30AM Mass of Christian Burial.

Interment will take place at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 500 Riverdale Ave., Lewiston, NY.
