James Moss Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by St. John's Family Funeral Home & Crematory on Mar. 11, 2026.
Dr. James Christopher Moss passed away peacefully on March 9th, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of music, devotion to family, and a life well lived. Dr. Moss earned his Bachelor's degree in Music from Carroll College, his Master's degree from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana, and his Doctorate from the University of Cincinnati. His lifelong passion was music and the arts. A dedicated musician, he played the tuba - faithfully carrying his beloved instrument to every home the family moved to over the years. Music was not just his profession, but the heartbeat of his life. He was a lifelong and devoted fan of the Green Bay Packers, proudly celebrating their victories and faithfully sharing in their heartbreak during the tough seasons. His loyalty to his team never wavered. James married the love of his life, Judith Moss, and together they shared 63 wonderful years of marriage. Their life together was rooted in love, partnership, and family. He is survived by his children: Heather Merrill, Scott Moss, and Brian Moss; and by his cherished grandchildren: Nianna Merrill, Nikiah Merrill, Nevin Merrill, Savanah Moss, Jasmine Moss, Isaiah Moss, and Derek Moss, who brought him immense pride and joy. He is also survived by his sister, Sue Moss, and his brother, Charles Moss. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Alice Moss Rousseau. Jim loved spending summers at Jingwalk by Minnequa, Wisconsin, and later at Pelican Island near Rhinelander, Wisconsin - places that became special chapters in his family's story. He treasured travel and made it a point to share meaningful experiences with his family, visiting historic locations such as New Orleans, Civil War battlefields, Disney World, and many other memorable destinations. Wherever he traveled, he never met a stranger. He had a gift for striking up long conversations with anyone, making new acquaintances feel like lifelong friends within minutes. Above all, Dr. Moss will be remembered for his deep love of music, his devotion to his family, his unwavering loyalty, and the warmth and generosity of spirit he shared so freely with others. His memory will live on in the songs he played, the conversations he started, and the family he loved so dearly.
