James Newman Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Bates Cooper Sloan Funeral Home - Mount Pleasant on Mar. 9, 2026.
James Leslie Newman, 74, passed away peacefully on March 7, 2026, at his home in Mount Pleasant. He was the husband of Barbara Greeney Newman. They shared 35 beautiful years of marriage together.

Born in Fort Worth, TX, he was the son of James Lynn Newman and Jamie Sue Matthews Newman. He graduated from Mount Pleasant High School in 1970. He retired from Luminant (Monticello Power Plant) after 33 dedicated years.

He enjoyed crossword puzzles, watching sports, cooking shows, QVC, or the news; trying weird foods, spending time with his family, and going to the Texas State Fair. He will be remembered for his love and affection for all of his family, his funny dry sense of humor, kind heart, and his open arms.

Les is survived by his wife Barbara Newman and dog Koda, daughters Dawn Ellis ( Husband Mike), Leslie Pritchett (Husband Danny), Dara Elliott (Husband Josh); grandchildren Alexis Rios (Husband Alejandro), Abigail Amerson (Jamie Burwell), Emily Schrumpf (Husband Austin), Macy Ellis, Kross Kyser, Ashleigh Tagg (Husband Eliyah), Ty Kyser, Addison Amerson (Caiden Scott), Jayme Elliott, Mallory Elliott, and Scarlett Elliott; great grandsons Sebastian Rios and Denver Schrumpf; father James Lynn Newman; sister Lenda Thomas, brother Ricky Newman (wife Patti), niece Randi Bailiff, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, brother Jerry Ray Newman, mother Jamie Sue Newman, brother-in-law Earl Thomas, dog Paisley and great grandson Baby Tagg.

The visitation will be held March 11, 2026, at 1pm at Bates-Cooper-Sloan Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held at 2pm following the visitation with interment at Winfield Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Les' memory to be made to Chambers Home Health and Hospice, 201 W 20th St., Suite 102, Mount Pleasant, TX, 75455
