James Oliver Obituary

Visit the Harrisburg Funeral & Cremation website to view the full obituary.

James Herbert Oliver, affectionately known as Jim, was born on April 14, 1947, in Greensboro, North Carolina. He passed away peacefully on October 26, 2025, in Concord, North Carolina, leaving behind a legacy of love, service, and commitment to his family, church, and community.

Jim was an industrious man whose career spanned several significant roles in the textile industry. He lent his expertise to renowned companies including Burlington Industries, Wrangler, Gerber Children's Wear, and Terry Products. His dedication to education shone through during his time as a teacher's assistant for both Cabarrus County Schools and Kannapolis City Schools, where he nurtured and inspired the younger generations.

In addition to his professional achievements, Jim proudly served in the U.S. Army from 1969 to 1972, including a deployment to Vietnam from 1970 to 1971. For his bravery and dedication, he was awarded the Vietnam Service Medal with two bronze service stars along with the National Defense Service Medal.

Jim's educational journey took him to Northeast Guilford High School, and he later attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His passion for knowledge extended beyond formal education—he enjoyed teaching Sunday School and was a devoted coach for softball. During the unprecedented times of COVID-19 and teacher's workdays, he had “Pop Pop School” for his grandchildren, where they engaged in various activities, including exciting science experiments conducted in his kitchen.

A man of deep faith, Jim loved the Lord and became a cherished member of the church community, actively participating as a deacon, children’s choir director and adult choir member. He was affiliated with several congregations, including Salvation Army, Hillcrest Baptist Church, and most recently, Providence Baptist Church. His warm spirit and approachable personality ensured that he never met a stranger, fostering connections wherever he went.

Jim had a profound love for his family. He is survived by his loving wife Donna Brooks Oliver, having been married since May 9, 1971. Together they raised a family that includes their daughter Chrissy (Michael) Williams and son Jason Scott (Claire) Oliver, along with their beloved grandchildren: Taylor, Gracie, and Logan. Also surviving are his sister Joan Miller and brother Joseph Oliver, who will forever cherish his memory.

He was preceded in death by his father Herbert Oliver, mother Gracie Oliver, brothers Jackie and Jerry Oliver, all of whom he held close in memory.

Jim's love for life was exemplified by his affinity for country music, church family, and the iconic sports teams of the UNC Tarheels. His joyful spirit and devotion to family will be dearly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

A visitation honoring Jim's life will be held on October 29, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Providence Baptist Church in Harrisburg, NC, followed by a funeral service starting at 11:00 AM and interment at Lakeview Memorial Park in Greensboro, NC at 3:00 PM.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to GATE Pregnancy Resource Center, 280 Concord Parkway S, Suite 119, Concord, NC 28027 or https://app.theauxilia.com/payments/client/gate_pregnancy_resource_center.
