JAMES "PHILLIP" PATTON Obituary
James Phillip Patton, known as 'Phil' to his close friends and family, passed away peacefully on March 1, 2024 at the age of 85.
James was born on March 14, 1938 in Chicago, IL and adopted by James Monroe and Edith W. (Allen) Patton who preceded him in death.
James grew up in the historic Norwood neighborhood in Indianapolis and graduated from Emmerich Manual High School in 1956. On August 31, 1963, James married Lula M. Burnett.
After completing his education, James followed his calling and became a minister, serving in the C.M.E., A.M.E. Zion and Baptist churches in Indianapolis, Terre Haute, Anderson, and Lynch, Kentucky. Over the years, he also worked as a security guard, chauffeur and counselor.
Much of James's life was focused on gaining an understanding of the human condition. His lifelong love for learning led him to delve deeply into the origins of religion, African American history, psychology, nutrition, martial arts and philosophy. These interests guided him throughout his life and aided him in what he referred to as his "Search for Truth".
James leaves to cherish his memory his daughter, Karen Martin; granddaughter, Alexis Martin; former spouse, Lula M. Patton and closest lifelong friend, William Duff. James's influence extended beyond his immediate family, touching the lives of all those he met with his dedication to service, sense of humor and charm.
The family extends a special thank you to the respectful, caring and compassionate caregivers and staff at Miller's Merry Manor - Indy East, Optum Care and Elara Caring hospice care.
