James Louis Payne was received by his Lord and Savior on Sunday, September 7, 2025. His final days were spent surrounded by his loving family. He was born July 2, 1939 in Memphis, Tennessee. He served in the Army. He worked his way up as a grocery store sacker in Memphis, Tennessee to become a corporate manager. He later moved to Texas where he managed several grocery stores for Piggly Wiggly. After that, he moved to Hallsville, Texas, where he owned Russell's grocery store. After retirement he spent most of his time traveling across the country with his wife in their RV. James was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He enjoyed spending time with his faithful companion, Winston, his 13 year old West Highland Terrier. He loved his church in Longview, and would invite everyone to visit Grace Creek Church. He loved hiking in Southern Utah, where his daughter lived, visiting the Grand Canyon, Zion National Park, and Lake Powell. He enjoyed hunting and fishing trips to Colorado and Tennessee in his RV with his son. He loved his grandchildren dearly and hung the moon for them each night. His face lit up when his great grand boys visited him. He was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia Jean Payne; his daughter, Lori Louise Payne; his parents, Janie Kennedy and James W. Payne; his sister, Barbara Payne and his grand son in law, Jared Johnson. He is survived by his son, James Russell Payne (Nancy) of Diana, Texas; daughter, Lisa Lynne Payne of Kanab, Utah; granddaughters, Lindsay Hlebowicz (Daniel) of Montgomery, Texas; Whitney Higginbotham (Kerry) of Diana, Texas; Ashley Payne Johnson of South Lake Tahoe, Nevada; great-grandchildren, Kadence and Karson Higginbotham of Diana, Texas. A funeral service will be held in the Chapel of Horn Family Funeral Home in Daingerfield, TX on Saturday, September 13, 2025 at 10 am. Interment will take place Wednesday, September 17, 2025 at 1 pm., at Memphis Memory Gardens, 6444 Raleigh Lagrange Rd. Memphis, Tennessee 38134. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made St Jude Children's Hospital or Grace Creek Church in Longview, Texas.
