James ‘Jim’ Robert Payne Sr. passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loved ones on Thursday, December 18, 2025. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Mayree Payne, his brother Robert ‘Rusty’ (Libby) Payne, his children James Jr. (Mary) Payne, Gary (Corrina) Payne, and Victoria (Scott) Courterier. He also has 10 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Helen & Robert Payne, sister Sheree (Harry) Kwapis, brother Don (Carol) Payne, daughter Pauline Yuchasz, and grandson Michael Payne.

Jim retired from Johannesburg-Lewiston Area Schools after serving as the Transportation Supervisor for 17 years. An avid outdoorsman, Jim guided Michigan’s first elk hunt in 1964 and enjoyed many years hunting bear and deer and being in the woods. He loved fishing, especially in Florida where he spent each winter for the last 20 years and enjoyed many trips out on the water with his family.

To say he had a green thumb would be an understatement; Jim enjoyed a thriving garden in his greenhouse each year, sharing his love of gardening with his grandchildren, always with tips and tricks at the ready. He tended to his farm all summer long and loved an afternoon horseback ride with his wife.

Above all, Jim loved spending time with his family and friends. Whether out at his pond, or playing cards around the table, he enjoyed every moment. He will be missed immensely by many.

The family has chosen to remember him privately.
