James David Poindexter, known fondly as “Jimmy,” passed away on January 1, 2021, at the age of 80. He was born on October 31, 1940, and grew up in Franklin County, Va. Jimmy led a life marked by dedication, service, and a passion for wildlife conservation.
Jimmy was preceded in death by his parents, James Paul Poindexter and Dorothy Evans Poindexter, his stepmother, Viola, and his brother-in-law, Paul Smith. He is survived by his sister Nancy Smith, brother and sister-in-law's Samuel and Kathy Brown, Michael and Twyla Brown, and numerous nieces and nephews.
After graduating from the Virginia Military Institute (VMI), Jimmy served as a Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Army for 20 years, proudly defending his country. Following his military career, he spent 30 years with the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS), a role that earned him deep respect for his commitment to justice and national security.
In his retirement, Jimmy and his beloved wife, Joann, relocated to Charleston, South Carolina, where he discovered a new passion for caring for turtles. He became a devoted leader of the Kiawah Island Turtle Patrol, working tirelessly to protect and preserve local wildlife.
Jimmy had many interests that brought joy to his life. He was a dedicated fan of NASCAR and enjoyed watching Survivor in his spare time. He developed a unique friendship with a 16-foot alligator, named George, who regularly visited his backyard. A true animal lover, Jimmy’s favorite companion was his cat, Bianca, who brought him great comfort.
Jimmy’s memory will live on in the hearts of his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. His legacy of service, kindness, and passion for nature will continue to inspire all who were touched by his presence.
A joint memorial service to celebrate the life of Jimmy and Joann will held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, February 22, 2025 at Conner-Bowman Funeral Chapel.
