James Mitchell Postell, 67, of Concord, passed away Saturday, September 9, 2023.
James was affectionately known as “Jimmy,” ”Jim,” Officer Jim,” “Pos,” “Pops,” and “Popsey.” He was born April 5, 1956, in Charlotte and he was very proud to be a native Charlottean. He was born to the late James Mitchell Postell, Sr. and the late Laura Katherine McAlister Postell. He was also preceded in death by his infant son, Michael Postell; and sister, Patricia Ann Postell.
Those left to cherish Jim’s memory include his beloved wife of 45 years, Susan Lorraine Hill Postell of Concord; daughter, Joy (Jay) Workman of Concord; daughter, Kelli (David) Brinson of Huntersville; son, Drew (Julia Grimes) Postell of Concord; and 7 grandchildren, Ava, Mason, Avery, Ava T, Aiden, Charley and Rowan, who he shared his love of Bigfoot, Shark Week, and SpongeBob and was the “school bus” driver for his granddaughters. Jim is also survived by his sister, Paula (Walter) Hartman of Antioch, TN; niece, Maggie Howard of Antioch, TN; mother-in-law, Lorraine Hill Love of Harrisburg; sister-in-law, Jeani Hill of Harrisburg; nephew, Robert James "R.J." (Kristie) Strain of Lano, TX; and niece, Baily (Donald) Sumrell (and their children, Brody, Wyatt, and Gavin) of Harrisburg.
Jim was an amazing husband, father, and Pops, and he devoted his life to sharing his faith in Jesus to anyone he met. He loved woodworking, singing Southern gospel music (the more Gaither the better), working in his yard (better not park on his grass!!), Panthers football (except when they were losing), and spending time with his family. Jim worked laying floor covering and being a draftsman until he went to B.L.E.T. (Basic Law Enforcement Training) at the age of 35 and became a Deputy Sheriff for Mecklenburg County. His claims to fame were being the hype man for Kevin Greene and Lamar Lathan, former Panther players, before each home Panther’s game; being “Officer Jim” on WFNZ; being able to bench press over 600 pounds; and meeting Rev. Billy Graham. Jim was inducted into the Independence High School Football Hall of Fame; was in the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Choir; was a band roadie for the Central Cabarrus Marching Vikings; and coached Pop Warner football. He taught his children and grandchildren how to take care of their families; how to love others sacrificially; and that above all else, a strong faith in Jesus Christ is the most important thing that we can have in this world.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 pm - 2:45 pm, Saturday, September 16, 2023, at University Hills Baptist Church, 1500 Suther Rd, Charlotte. Jim’s Celebration of Life service will follow at 3:00 pm in the sanctuary of University Hills, officiated by Rev. Dr. Michael Toney and Rev. Alan Taylor. The service will be available on Facebook Live (details will be available at a later date). In memory of Jim, please wear Carolina Panthers attire or colors.
