James Alvin Prescott, age 70 transitioned this life on May 9, 2023 in the comfort of his home in
Keyport, NJ. James was born on September 12, 1952 in Los Angeles, CA to James Prescott and Lillian Louretta Prescott. He was the second child of six children that they would have. James was popular throughout grade school and early on became known as "Pee-Wee" for being small but fearless. He ultimately graduated from Franklin High School in 1970. Once he graduated he went to college in Fayetteville, NC. Once he returned from school he held various jobs. He often talked about the work he did at Johnson & Johnson for several years.
In 1972, James met Cynthia Fisher and began dating. The two were inseparable. They got married on November 24, 1973. They welcomed their first child, Dameon Alexander on September 20, 1974. Then on September 12, 1981 they added a daughter, Alexia Danielle to the family.
James began working as a Chef for Regency Park Nursing Center and over the years became a supervisor and by the time he retired he was the Director of Foods and Nutrition at the Center. He would often share stories that the residents could tell by what arrived on their plates if he was on the shift that day. He took his position very seriously and formed life-long friendships with many of the people he worked with in the kitchen. During this time, he also developed his own catering business called, Prescott Catering. He catered anything from bar mitzvahs to weddings and everything in between. Even long after his last catering job, James was proud to cook a dish for any church event that he could. He would offer up a cheesecake or a pot roast without hesitation and he'd love to hear everyone raving about them later.
James was raised in the church and he and his siblings grew up with a firm belief in God passed on from their grandparents and mother. He had been baptized at an early age and always loved the Lord. He was re-baptized as he got older. James decided to return to school to study theology in his mid-50's. James became a licensed Baptist Minister in June 2011 under Pastor Stephen Moore of Second Baptist Church of Matawan. James earned a Masters in Theology from Eastern Bible Institute in 2013. At the time of his passing, he was a faithful member of Second Baptist Church of
Matawan, NJ. He will be remembered for his descriptive messages from the pulpit and for always being willing to join the choir with his one of a kind tambourine playing.
Once James retired, he and his wife were free to be doting grandparents. He would drive the kids to and from school, being sure to pray before they left in the morning and providing afternoon snacks when they returned. Anyone who knew him knew that his granddaughters were his pride and joy.
James was predeceased by his maternal grandparents Charles and Velma Dunn, his paternal grandparents Mark and Ester Prescott, his father James Prescott, his wife Cynthia Prescott, his brother Ozell Prescott, his sister Lisa Prescott Nespola, his Son-In-Law Jaliyl Malik Hill and his granddaughter Arianna Joy Prescott.
