James Riddle Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by West & Parrish & Pedigo Funeral Home - Spencer Chapel from Dec. 7 to Dec. 8, 2025.
James "Jim" R. Riddle, Jr., age 78, of Spencer, passed away peacefully on Friday, November 28, 2025, at I.U. Health Bloomington Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.
Jim was born on August 19, 1947, in Greencastle, Indiana, to the late James R. Riddle, Sr. and Florence (Vixler) Riddle. His late stepmother, Ogretta Riddle, became a steady, guiding presence throughout his life. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Butch Riddle.
Jim proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. Throughout his service, he earned several distinctions, including the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with two bronze service stars, Vietnam Campaign Medal with device, Expert Rifle Badge, and Good Conduct Medal.
Later in life, Jim married the love of his life, Deretha F. (May) Riddle, and together they shared more than 44 years of adventure, joy and companionship. In their early years, they loved to travel, creating many memories. As the years went on, they found just as much joy in the quieter moments - peaceful evenings at home, simply enjoying each other's company along with Callie, Jim's faithful cat.
Jim spent many years selling automotive parts before later working part-time as a janitor at Spencer - Owen Schools, where he valued the relationship he built.
He will be remembered for his kind heart, warm conversations and quiet strength. Jim valued simplicity, loyalty and time spent with the people who mattered most to him.
Jim leaves behind his beloved wife, Deretha Riddle, along with many cherished family members and friends who will forever hold his memory close.
Military Honors and Funeral service will be held at West & Parrish & Pedigo Funeral Home in Spencer of Walton Funeral Service at 1:00 PM on Thursday, December 11, 2025, with Pastor Darin Bowlen officiating. A private burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery in Spencer.
Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Thursday from 12:00 Noon until the time of service.
