James Riemer Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Highlands Family-Owned Funeral Home - Louisville on Jan. 12, 2025.
James (Jim) Douglas Riemer lost his battle with lung disease on December 26, in Louisville, KY, holding his wife's hand. Jim was born in Albion, New York, on November 25, 1953, to Theodore and Mary Riemer.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Ted and Mary Riemer, and his beloved Pekingese, Gus and Maggie, Peter and Zack, and Shifu, and two cats who shared the last few years of his life, Lilly and his treasured companion, Poppy, who was always by his side or in his lap even when he was working on the computer.
He is survived by his wife, Sandy Eubanks of Louisville, KY; his brother, Ron Riemer of Albion, NY; and his sister-in-law, Vicki Eubanks of Louisville, KY.
Jim grew up outside Medina, NY. He attended college at SUNY Brockport in Brockport, New York, and graduate school at Bowling Green State University, where he earned a M.A. and Ph.D. in American Literature. For over 40 years, Jim taught American literature and popular literature at Marshall University in Huntington, WV, where he held the rank of full professor. For the past few years, he has worked from his home in Louisville, KY, which he shared with his wife of 37 years. Jim was a creative and dedicated teacher, who loved sharing his love of literature with his students. During the last few weeks of his life, he was excited about some new ideas he had for the two classes he was looking forward to teaching in Spring 2025.
If you knew Jim, you would know that he was young at heart. He collected comic books and Funko Pop! figures. He even taught a class at Marshall University on the graphic novel. His favorite place to shop was The Great Escape, a comic bookstore. His favorite action heroes were Indiana Jones and Batman. He asked for a Lego Indiana Jones: Escape from the Lost Tomb set for his last birthday. To relax, he played online video games; The Elder Scrolls was his favorite. For years Jim had season tickets to the Louisville Orchestra, The Kentucky Opera, The Louisville Ballet, Actors Theatre of Louisville, and PNC Broadway in Louisville. His favorite productions were Hamilton and The Lion King. He liked playing trivia games and was an expert on movie trivia. Jim thought of himself as an Eeyore, but in reality he was like his hero Indiana Jones. He kept his sense of humor and his determination to live even when faced with unbeatable odds. For those who shared his life, it's hard to imagine life without Jim. He will always live in our hearts.
The service for Jim was private. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the American Lung Association.

Sandy, I don´t know if you remember me from graduate school. I know we haven´t been in touch in many years, but for some reason, you and Jim were strongly on my heart this morning, so I googled you-and saw Jim´s obituary. I was so sad to see he had just died. Jim was such a kind, gentle soul, and I have only the warmest memories of him. Please accept my sympathy at this sad time. Rona Klein (I may have still been Rona Glass at that point.)
