James Robert Roden, known to all who loved him as Jim, crossed the river and met his Savior face to face on September 18, 2025, at the age of 56. Jim was a devoted husband to Melanie for 31 years and a proud father to their daughter, Avery, who was truly his pride and joy.
Jim and Melanie first crossed paths in 1993 while working in the Medical Towers in the Texas Medical Center. From that moment, they built a life together full of love, laughter, and unwavering companionship. Their bond was one of perfect harmony, strengthened over the years by mutual respect, humor, and great music.
Their greatest joy came with the addition of their daughter, Avery, and she quickly became the light of Jim's life. Jim and Avery were inseparable-best buddies and the heartbeat of his world. Together, they created countless memories, traveling to new places and cherishing the simple pleasures in life. Through it all, Jim's love for Melanie and Avery was constant, with his heart fully devoted to both of them.
Jim was a man of many qualities-loyal, generous, and, at times, delightfully mischievous. He had an irrepressible sense of humor and a knack for stirring the pot, but always in the spirit of fun. His infectious laughter and quick wit could brighten any room, and he was never one to take life too seriously. Jim loved a good laugh, often creating moments that made those around him feel like they were part of something special.
Known for his willingness to help others, Jim was the go-to guy for friends and family when something needed fixing. He could always be counted on to lend a hand-usually with a smile and a joke. His practical skills were matched only by his heart, and he offered help freely, without hesitation or expectation.
A passionate outdoorsman, Jim found peace and purpose in hunting and fishing. He was especially proud of being inducted into the Boone and Crockett Club for his record-setting non-typical white-tailed deer, scoring 210 1/8-the second best ever recorded in Texas for a low-fence deer. His love for the outdoors wasn't just about the sport, but the tradition, time with those he loved, and deep respect for nature. Jim also introduced many to that world, especially kids and first-time hunters, finding real joy in watching others experience the thrill and beauty of the hunt for the first time.
Jim was also a lifelong sports fan. Whether watching a game from his spot on the couch or cheering in the stands, he never missed a game and always wore his team's colors with pride. One of his proudest sports memories was traveling to Cooperstown to watch Craig Biggio's Hall of Fame induction-an experience that reflected both his love of sports and his appreciation for the people who make the game great.
He loved to travel, but Jim preferred the scenic route. Road trips were his style-music up and plenty of stops along the way to take it all in. Whether it was a road trip across the country or just another weekend at a familiar favorite, he embraced the journey just as much as the destination.
At home, Jim was never without the companionship of his dogs. Archie, his loyal chocolate lab, was not just a hunting partner but a true best friend. Radley, the dog he often joked he merely "tolerated," was, in truth, another extension of his big, soft heart.
Professionally, Jim spent nearly 30 years operating and maintaining commercial office buildings with Granite Properties and CBRE. Mechanically gifted and highly trained, he earned multiple licenses and was recognized for his outstanding customer service and technical skill. Most recently, Jim served as the Chief Engineer responsible for facility operations at the Dow Chemical Plant in Lake Jackson. He loved the work he did and was deeply respected by his colleagues, contractors, and peers-many of whom considered it a privilege to have worked alongside him.
Jim is survived by his loving wife, Melanie Roden, and their daughter, Avery Roden, who was the joy of his life. He is also survived by his mother, Joan Marie Portele Roden, and his siblings: his baby sister, Rebecca Roden; brother Chris Roden, married to Casie Roden, and their daughter, Camerin; sister Jean Roden; and sister Susan Adams, married to Jeff Adams, with daughters Jessica, Sarah, and Carissa. He is also survived by extended family and many beloved friends whom he loved like family.
He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Randolph Roden, and his niece, Caia Nicole Roden.
