James "Jim" Michael Saunders, a cherished husband, father, and dedicated community servant, passed away peacefully on February 17, 2026, in Wilmington, NC, at the age of 76. Born on July 29, 1949, in
Burke, SD, Jim lived a life marked by dedication, honor, and service.
Jim proudly served his country as a Veteran of the United States Army. Following his military service, he committed himself to a distinguished law enforcement career spanning 42 years. His journey began with the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department, where his leadership and dedication left a lasting impact and saw him promoted to Lieutenant. He then went on as a Sergeant and ultimately rose to the rank of Chief in both the Central City Police Department and the Pagosa Springs Police Department. After leaving the Pagosa Springs Police he went on to train the new sheriff as the undersheriff until 2012 and continued mentoring law enforcement officers even after officially retiring from duty.
In addition to his professional achievements, Jim was a devoted husband for over 33 years to his beloved wife, Sue Saunders, who survives him at their home. His legacy continues through his son Nicholas Saunders and daughter-in-law Carlyn of Richlands, and his daughter Stacey Saunders, her mother Alice Richardson, and stepfather Pete of
Palm Springs, CA. Jim was treasured by his special extended family, Scott Fleming, Loree Fleming, and Charlee Giddings, as well as the many work colleagues and brothers he served with both in Vietnam and in law enforcement, which created lasting friendships and reunions which continue to this day. He will also be fondly remembered by all his
beloved four-legged companions.
Jim was preceded in death by his loving parents, Howard and Georgia Saunders, and his dear in-laws, Merilynn and Jim Hutchison.
He will be remembered not only for his professional accomplishments but also for his commitment to his family and the indelible mark he left on those who had the privilege to know him.
