Rod was one of the greatest men I had the pleasure to know, he was a mentor to me I learned so much from him, and love all his great stories about life and family, he had a big heart and I will never forget him or the family, he will forever be in my heart

Rod, Jeff and Lou at Lake Mead
Jeffrey Meyer
June 10, 2021
We were the three amigos, jogging most mornings 4.1 miles and getting on the weight scales at our gym every Friday to determine who was crowned Gordo of the week. Rod, Lou and I celebrated the event every week, meeting later at a restaurant for a 5,000 calorie, no guilt, gluttonous celebration of our friendship. Later on Friday nights we would indulge ourselves with wine and more food, followed by shooting his pellet gun at rabbits from his 2nd floor balcony and a round of eight ball. The three amigos got our wives to go with us on a cruise in the Baltic Sea and continued to have our weigh offs to determine who was Gordo of the Sea. Rod and I were both born on Dec. 20 and always argued on our birthdays which of us was another year older or another year younger. My one regret is moving to San Diego when I retired, but the memories I have with my buddy are endless. He taught me to fly his plane, once sneaking control of the yoke and sending it into a dive and yelling at me to "pull up, pull up!" I nearly had a heart attack until he broke out laughing and I knew the joke was on me. There are dozens of other stories but the most incredulous was from the day Rod passed. Instead of calling him on his birthday, Dec. 20, I was somehow compelled to call him Dec. 14. I did not know he was ill and had not spoken to him or his family since Dec. 20 the year before. His wife, Sue, answered the phone and told me Rod was very ill and was about to go to the hospital. The ambulance came for him while I was on the phone and he died shortly after. Although I was crushed, it occurred to me that Rod somehow reached out to me as he was dying to say goodbye. It was a spiritual moment that brought me from tears to disbelief and finally to grace.
