James W. Schapp, loving husband, father, grandfather, and brother, age 91 of Collinsville, IL, peacefully passed away on Friday, March 21, 2025 at his residence surrounded by his loving family.
He was born November 30, 1933, in St. Louis, MO, to the late William John and Margaret Mary (nee Smith) Schapp. He attained a BA from St. Mary's College in Winona, MN and Master of Social Work from Saint Louis University. He taught for many years with the Christian Brothers but held numerous jobs throughout his life, ultimately retiring from the Federal Bureau of Prisons as a social worker. His love for teaching brought him back to the middle school again at St. Bruno Catholic School in Pinckneyville, IL. He was a member of SS Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Collinsville, the Knights of Columbus, and Faith in Action. He enjoyed reading, traveling, and being with his family and friends.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Nancy (nee O'Reilly) Schapp; sister, JoAnn Kapp; two brothers-in-law, Mike O'Reilly and Paul Kapp; and a niece, Debbie Kapp.
Surviving is his wife, Patricia Grant-Schapp, whom he married November 1, 2003; two children: Chris (Reggie) Schapp and Amy (James) Linn; and two step-children: Dean (Kim) Grant and Deb (Kevin) Corgan; four grandchildren: Kelley Linn, James (Anna Beth) Linn, Lauryn (Caleb) Willingham and Mackenzie Linn; three step-grandchildren: Austin Corgan, Shannon Corgan, Dylan (Kailey) Corgan; one sister: Mary Catherine (Dennis) Roach; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 25, 2025 at Barry Wilson Funeral Home in Maryville, IL and 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 26, 2025 at SS Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Collinsville.
Funeral mass will follow the visitation on Wednesday at 11 a.m. with Father Mike Haag celebrant. Burial will be in Saint Anthony's Cemetery, Lively Grove, IL.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to SS Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Faith in Action, St. Vincent DePaul, or the Knights of Columbus Council #1712. They will be received at the visitation or can be mailed to Barry Wilson Funeral Home, 2800 N. Center Street, Maryville, IL 62062.
