Lt. Col. James Armitt Scott III – a proud Veteran of the United States Army passed away Thursday, August 18, 2022 in San Antonio TX.
Jim Scott was born in the Panama Canal Zone August 5,1938 to Lt. James A. Jr. and Alice C. Scott. He graduated from University High School in Iowa City Iowa where he distinguished himself as an athlete in both football and basketball. He graduated from the United States Military Academy class of 1961. He earned a Masters of Science Degree from Purdue
In 1972.
During his 22 years of service in the United States Army, Lt Col Scott was recognized and celebrated for his devotion to duty and his incomparable heroics on the field of battle. His honors and medals include the Distinguished Service Cross, Silver Star, Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster, Air Medal with 28 Oak Leaf Clusters, Purple Heart With Oak Leaf Cluster, Army Commendation Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Palm, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Silver Star-4 awards, Valorous Unit Award, Meritorious Unit Award, Vietnam Service Award with 2 stars, George Washington Freedom Foundation Award 1974, Army Aviator of the Year 1965, 2018 induction in the Georgia Military Veterans Hall of Fame. He will be inducted posthumously in the Army Aviation Hall of Fame on April 27, 2023.
Jim retired from the military in 1980 to become an investment banker in Denver, Co where he served as CEO and Chairman of the Board of Chesley and Dunn Investment Bank. In 1991 Jim and Kelly moved to Georgia to raise Emu and Ostrich and organic vegetables. Jim served as President of the Georgia Emu Association until 1995 and on the Board of the Georgia Ratite Council until 1998. In 2021, Jim and Kelly retired to the Army Residence Community in San Antonio, TX.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years Kelly Blair Scott; four children: J. Schell Scott of Denver CO, James Armitt Scott IV (Kathie) of Elberton GA, Lacy Scott Wyant (Mike) of Grants Pass OR, and Russell T. Scott (Brette) Denver CO; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two brothers; Vince Scott of Paradox, CO and Alan Scott (Shirley) of Scottsdale AZ.
Jim was a loving and dedicated husband, father, Papa, brother, uncle, and friend. He impacted many lives, and will be missed tremendously. Burial will take place at the United States Military Academy in West Point, New York at a later date.
