James Donald Seiling, affectionately known as Jim to his loved ones, passed away peacefully on December 19, 2023, at the age of 87, in
Columbiaville, Michigan. Born on November 18, 1936, in
North Vernon, Indiana, Jim was a man whose zest for life and love for his family knew no bounds.
Jim proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy, an experience that shaped much of his life's story. Following his service, he found love and companionship in Nancy Parsons, whom he married on November 6, 1965. Together, they built a life filled with love, laughter, and adventure. Jim was a devoted father to James Seiling II and Dawn Seiling Dyess. His role as a cherished Papa to Kelly (Larry) Johnston, John Paul Dyess, and Jeffrey Dyess brought him immense joy, as did being a Great Grandpa to Trace, Kase, Chase, and Jase. Jim's brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Robert (Bob) & Rosemary (Tootsie) Parsons, along with many nieces and nephews, will fondly remember his spirited presence. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Elsie Seiling, and his brother, Jerry Seiling, who are undoubtedly welcoming him with open arms.
Throughout his life, Jim's interests painted the picture of a man who embraced every moment with enthusiasm. He lived for over 30 years in Texas, where he rode horses with a special fondness for his horse, Rembrant. His love for speed was not just limited to horseback riding; he also found joy in feeling the freedom on his Harley, cruising in his 1962 Corvette and driving his own stock race car.
A huge sports fan, Jim especially loved Westerns, Red Wings and NASCAR. His morning routine was a sacred time for him to read the newspaper, savor his coffee, and catch up on current events-always with a particular interest in the sports section. He delighted in compiling sports trivia to share with his family, a testament to his love of games and competition.
Jim's interests extended to the tranquility of nature; he loved hunting and was often found playing cards with family and friends. Despite his adventurous spirit, he also enjoyed quiet evenings with his wife and loving dogs. A testament to his handy nature, Jim could often be found tinkering in his pole barn, where he demonstrated his remarkable ability to fix or create just about anything.
Those who knew Jim will remember him as a man who was not just handy, but incredibly interesting and spirited. Jim's legacy is one of love, strength, and an unyielding passion for life. He has left an indelible mark on the hearts of those who knew him, and his memory will be cherished in the stories that will be told and retold by his loving family and friends.
As we bid farewell to James Donald Seiling, we celebrate a life well-lived, a journey well-traveled, and a man who was truly one of a kind. Jim's spirit will continue to inspire and guide us, just as the memories we hold will keep him forever close.
