James C. Shamplo, age 91, of Hillsdale, passed away on Monday, December 22, 2025, at the Hillsdale County Medical Care Facility. He was born on June 7, 1934, in Hudson, to Clifford and Viva (Laser) Shamplo. He married Marion Hanning on August 25, 1973, and she preceded him in death on March 5, 2015.
James graduated from Pittsford High School and went on to work at Clark Equipment in Jackson and later as a custodian for Adrian Schools. He was a member of Thornhill Baptist Church in Hudson for many years. He enjoyed singing and led his church congregation in worship on Sundays. He was a history buff and enjoyed researching US history and his own genealogy. James also loved fishing, working in his garden, going out to eat; especially Saucy Dog's to play Keno; and making others laugh.
James is survived by five children, Barbette (Steven) Spratt, Donella (Richard) Hunt, Chuck Hanning, Linda (Bob) McNette, and Sandy Keller; two paternal grandchildren, Stasha Spratt, and Steven (Yvan) Spratt; and many grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. His sister Joyce Shannon.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 42 years, Marion; two children, Mike and Mark Hanning, and four siblings Dean Shamplo, Wendell Shamplo, Margaret Bonner, and Beverly Mullaly.
A graveside service for James Shamplo will take place on Saturday, December 27, 2025, at 3:30 PM at Waldron Cemetery with Pastor Mike Prince officiating. Arrangements have been entrusted to the VanHorn-Eagle Funeral Home in Hillsdale.
Memorial contributions are suggested to Hillsdale County Medical Care Facility.
