James "Jim" Sharkey, 72, a cherished husband, devoted father, and beloved brother, passed away peacefully on October 22, 2024, in Holmdel. Born on December 5, 1951, in Jersey City, he grew up in Colonia, lived in Iselin for 43 years, prior to moving to Keansburg. Jim was a man whose knowledge and wit left an indelible mark on the hearts of those who knew him.
Predeceased by his parents, Cornelius and Mary Lorraine Sharkey, as well as his brother Cornelius "Connie" Sharkey, Jim's memory will forever be cherished by his loving family. He leaves behind his loving wife of 33 years, Nancy Sharkey. His daughter Allison Sharkey and her husband Jake Salazar, stepdaughter Dawn Licata, and her children Thea, Ella, and Jack. He is also survived by his brother Owen Sharkey, and sisters Kathy Pranio, Susan Perez, and Jane Papke, all of whom will fondly remember their times together.
Jim was a proud member of the Sheet Metal Workers' Local 22 out of Kenilworth, where he dedicated many years of skilled craftsmanship.
An enthusiastic sports fan, Jim's passion for baseball was unparalleled. He was an avid fan of the Yankees, Mets, and Giants, reveling in the thrill of the game whether it was a winning or losing season. His interests extended beyond the ballpark; Jim enjoyed all sports and cherished his trips to Cape May with his family, where they would spend time camping, eating and enjoying the beach.
Jim's love for the water was also evident in his favorite pastime, "crabbing" with his work buddies. These excursions were not just about the catch but about the camaraderie and stories shared between friends.
A self-proclaimed history buff, Jim possessed an encyclopedic knowledge of historical facts. His family and friends often referred to him as a "book of useless information," a title he bore with pride and humor. His intelligence was as vast as his curiosity, and conversations with Jim were always enlightening and filled with his unique brand of wit.
Jim's tough guy act never fooled those who knew him best; his tender heart and generous spirit were always close to the surface. He was super smart and very funny, often using his humor to lighten the mood.
In honoring Jim's life, we remember the light he brought into this world and the lasting impact he has made on all of us. He was a genuine provider, a pillar of strength, and a true friend. He will be deeply missed but lovingly remembered by all.
Family and friends are invited to pay their respects on Friday, October 25, 2024 from 3-7pm, with Military Honors starting at 6:30pm at the Jacqueline M. Ryan Home for Funerals 233 Carr Ave. Keansburg. Cremation will be private

I am so sorry to hear the passing of this great man! I remember when I had my daughters christening and the little kids that attended, fell in love with him. There was one in particular that attached themselves to his leg and then he held them the whole time. I had the party in my little bungalow home with no room to move and he was more than happy to make that little ones day and keep them happy. He was nothing but nice to me over the years. Always understanding and loving to everyone. He will be missed.
