Thomas "Tommy" McMahon, aged 72, resident of New Jersey, passed away peacefully on September 21, 2025, surrounded by love, in Keansburg, where he grew up. Born on March 9, 1953, in Elizabeth, NJ, Tom was a man of great humor and an even greater heart, who enriched the lives of all who knew him.
Tom was the son of the late Thomas McMahon, who preceded him in death in 1981, and Doreen McMahon of Keansburg, who survives him. His life was marked by the love and bonds of a large family, including his cherished daughter, Caitlin "Magoo" McMahon of Chicago, who was the light of his life. Although predeceased by his son, Robert "Robbie" McMahon in 2018, and brothers Kenneth McMahon in 2005, and Michael McMahon in 2019, Tom's memory lives on through his surviving siblings, a brother and sister-in-law, Jeffrey and Kathleen McMahon of Neptune, and his sister-in-law and her husband, Karen and Alan Woods of Tinton Falls. Tom's grand dog, Jameson, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family members will fondly remember his infectious laughter and goofy personality.
Tom spent his professional life as a self-employed carpenter, a trade where his skilled hands and strong work ethic were evident in every project he completed. He was a man who knew the value of hard work and took pride in a job well done.
An avid New York Mets fan, Tom never missed a chance to cheer on his favorite team, with his mom by his side, a passion they shared with friends and family alike. His love for music was undeniable, and he treasured the memories of attending concerts of legendary artists like Lynard Skynard and Pink Floyd. Tom's stories from these events were legendary in their own right, often recounted with a vividness that could transport his listeners to those very moments. Tom loved playing his 12-string acoustic guitar, even writing a song for his daughter titled "Babies Don't Blink", and bought her a guitar of her own when she was 12.
Tom was known for his great storytelling ability, a gift that kept his listeners captivated and often left them in stitches. His tales were a tapestry of humor, wisdom, and humanity that will be retold and cherished for generations. He lived in the Florida Keys for 20 years where he raised his daughter, taking out the pontoon boat, going to the beach often and giving all her friends silly nicknames that they remember to this day. He was also known for making a mean cheesecake and loved all kinds of baking, referred to as the "cheesecake master" by friends. Even in his hardest times through his battle with cancer, he gave online support to others facing the same battles, reminding them that their lives are worth fighting for and that there is also room to laugh no matter the situation.
Above all, Tom will be remembered as a devoted dad. His unconditional love, support, and guidance were the foundation of Caitlin's life. His role as a father was the one he was most proud of, and he embraced it with every fiber of his being. She will carry his strength and unwavering humor in the face of adversity within her for the rest of her life.
The void left by Tom's passing is immeasurable, yet his spirit and the memories he created will continue to inspire and comfort those who were fortunate enough to know him. Tom knew what it meant to truly live, chasing whatever fun opportunities were presented and making life-long friends along the way. Tom McMahon was the poster child of belly laughter and his legacy will endure through the love he gave and the lives he touched.
