James Spasoff Obituary

James Spasoff

Jan 3, 1956 - Dec 6, 2024

James (Jim) Robert "Spaz" Spasoff, age 68, a 40+ year resident of Crown Point, IN, passed away on Friday, December 6, 2024.

Jim is survived by his two sons, Jimmy (Kasey) Spasoff and Michael Spasoff; 3 grandsons: Tristan, Evan, Blake Spasoff; sisters: Mary Lynn (late John) Demkovich, Ann Marie Spasoff; nieces and nephew: Alexandra (Chris) Karabatsos, John Demkovich II, Jade Demkovich; great nieces and nephews: Nikolas Kajmakoski, George, Mia, and Lexi Karabatsos; honorary step-son Chris (Katie) Bunnell; ex-wives and lifelong friends Marie Cardenas-Perez and Debbie Spasoff; and Jim's cousins and good friends.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents: Jim and Helen Spasoff; and sisters, Linda Zestanakis and Diane Spasoff.

Jim was born on January 3, 1956 in Hammond, IN. He grew up in Gary and Merrillville and eventually graduated from Andrean High School, Class of 1974. He began his career at Inland Steel right after graduation and worked there for 43 years, primarily in the 11 Battery and 4 BOF departments, eventually retiring from 4 BOF at ArcelorMittal in 2017. In addition to the mill, James was actively involved with his family's popular photography business, Spasoff Photography, from a young age. It was not uncommon to see him at local school dances or even a wedding or two shooting photos with members of his family or friends of people in front of the beautiful backdrops hand-created by his mother, Helen.

"Spaz," as he liked to be called, loved to tell stories and be the center of attention. He always "knew a guy" no matter where you were going or what you were doing and would orchestrate connections from his favorite chair in his living room. He knew everything about anything and you could never tell him he was wrong. Right behind his love for his sons and grandsons was his passion for the Chicago Bears. A lifelong season ticket holder with family tickets dating back to 1945, Spaz loved sharing Bears football with as many people as he could. He enjoyed taking people to their first games and tailgating. If there was a home game you knew exactly where to find him, Soldier Field.

Friends may visit with the family on Thursday, December 12, 2024 at Geisen Funeral, Cremation & Reception Centre, 606 E. 113th Ave., Crown Point, IN 46307 from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM with a funeral service beginning at 6:30 PM with Lisa Casimer officiating.

So sorry to hear about Jim's passing. A customer came in to our store last week and told me Jim passed. I talked to Jim several months ago as I learned his sister had passed. Lack of papers and current info is hard to know until after the fact. Jim talked about wanting to get rid of some items and I told him to give us a call. The Spasoff were great customers of ours in their studio business and have many memories of Jim, his Dad and sisters as they kept their business going. Anything we can do to help, just give us a call.
