Jim Louis Starkovich, 87 passed away peacefully September 4, 2025. He was reunited in eternity with his wife Joann Teresa Anesi Starkovich of 67 years, who preceded him in death 8 months prior. Jim was born on December 21,1937 in Gallup, New Mexico to the late Slavo and Rebecca Starkovich. He had 5 sisters and 2 brothers. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son Kevin Starkovich, sister Sue Armstrong and brother Ted Starkovich. Jim had a fulfilled life starting as a Marine stationed in San Diego, CA then as a drill Sargent at Parris Island. While working for Sandia Labs involving the minute man missile project and nuclear triggers he went to college to become an electrical engineer graduating from Univ. of New Mexico. After graduating, he took a job offer and moved his family to Boca Raton, Florida, where he worked 24 years for IBM, working in Quality control and ultimately retiring from their Marketing Division. His career with IBM and later Marathon Tours enabled him and his wife to travel around the world, especially towards the end of his career. Jim and Joann both loved traveling the world. His family is proud of his many accomplishments. Especially his running, it was an integral part of Jim's life. Starting at age 35 he would do a birthday run. Every year running his age in miles finally stopping at the age of 54. After completing numerous marathons, including the Boston marathon, he took on the challenge of running across the state of Florida. Next it was the Grand Canyon, from the south rim to the north. His passion for running was so great that he trained hard for a year and in 1994 he ran across the entire USA. Taking 88 days with Joann providing his support and acting as his pit crew. This run was featured in the 2020 book "Across America on Foot." Jim was a caring and loving family man and is survived by his 3 sons, Gordon Boerner (Leigh); F. Michael Starkovich; Eric Starkovich (Carol). He was a cherished grandpa to Amanda, Amy, Anna, Ivona, Elizabeth Grace and a great grandpa to Alex, Destiny and Angel Jim also leaves behind siblings: Sally Gonzalez (Donald), Patsy Theiler, Margaret Weber, Tom Starkovich (Candice), Betsy Krzykowski (Curtis) and numerous other nieces and nephews. Jim will be sorely missed, but the wonderful memories everyone has of him will be cherished. There will be no service, as Jim's wishes were to be cremated and he desired no celebration of life. Heritage Funeral and Cremation Service of Bunnell, FL assisted the family with arrangements. www.HeritageFlagler.com
