James Stephens Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Scott Funeral Home - Alvin on Dec. 10, 2025.
James David (J.D.) Stephens, age 94, of Alvin, Texas, passed away Wednesday, December 10, 2025. J.D. was born on June 12, 1931, in Arlington, Texas, and was a resident of Alvin for over 63 years. He worked for many years in the chemical industry and remained a cherished and devoted member of South Park Baptist Church throughout his life. J.D. was preceded in death by his parents, Gladys and Carl Stephens, and by his grandson, Will Johnson Jr.

J.D. was a proud veteran of the United States Air Force. In 2023, he was honored with selection for an Honor Flight to Washington, D.C.-a meaningful recognition of his service and sacrifice. At age 92, he also stood at home plate at the Houston Astros' 2023 home opener, where he was celebrated by 42,000 cheering fans.

In 1972, J.D. and his four children joined with his new wife, Barbara, and her three children to form their own version of the "Brady Bunch." Together, all nine family members helped build a home on Grace Street in Alvin - a home that became the cornerstone of their family life. That team effort reflected one of J.D.'s lifelong mottos - a "we can do anything" spirit that continues to inspire his children throughout their lives.

J.D. will be remembered for his deep love for his family, his kindness toward others, and his fun-loving personality. He had a unique gift for making people smile and a remarkable ability to turn strangers into friends within moments. Whether performing tricks with Misti, the family dog, who won first place at the Astroarena Dog Show, or captivating children and adults alike with his pocketful of magic tricks, J.D. lived a lifetime dedicated to bringing joy to others.

J.D. is survived by his wife of 53 years, Barbara Stephens; daughters Teri Varnado (Don) and Leslie Maus (Bob); sons Jimmy Stephens (Nancy), Al Stephens (Recha), Mike Jones (Penny), Donny Stephens, and Bobby Jones; 11 grandchildren-Tonya, Shana, Jason, Brian, Stacy, Megan, Sarah, Lexi, Katie, Jamie, and Jake; 17 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and numerous other relatives and friends.

A visitation will be held Monday, December 15, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at South Park Baptist Church in Alvin, Texas, with funeral services beginning at 11:00 AM. Interment will follow at the Confederate Cemetery.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Scott Family, 1421 East Hwy 6, Alvin, Texas 77511, (281) 585-1000, www.scottfuneralhome.net.
