James J. Steponik, 88, of Knowlton, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 9, 2025.
James was born on July 11, 1937, the son of the late John and Christine (Reshel) Steponik. After high school, Jim enlisted in the Army. While he was stationed in Texas, he met the love of his life, Barbara Hutchinson. They married on Jan. 21, 1961, in Temple, TX, and enjoyed 64 years of love. She survives.
Jim deeply loved his family and all things outdoors. He grew up farming moss and enjoyed years owning a farm. Joining the cows were peacocks, quails, turkeys, and even an abandoned raccoon. He was an avid fisher and hunter, with his treasure being a 12-point buck. After retirement from the Mosler Safe Company, Jim and Barbara travelled the world. They visited Alaska, Egypt, Africa, China, and Europe, enjoying each other’s company. Jim was a loving husband, dad, and grandpa, doting on his grandchildren and spoiling them rotten.
Besides his wife Barbara, James is survived by his children, Jim (Robyn) and Sandy (Steve) Lewens; grandchildren, Colton, Gabrielle, and Isaac Lewens; two brothers-in-law, Ralph Smrecek and Larry Zschernitz; sister-in-law, Gail Roe; as well as many nieces and nephews.
James was preceded in death by his brother John Steponik; sisters Betty Heider, Patricia Smrecek, and Joyce Zschernitz; brothers-in-law, William Heider, Fred Stults, and Ted Roe; and sister-in-law, Peggy Stults.
The family would like to thank the staff at Silver Lace Memory Care by Primrose and Moments Hospice for lovingly caring for him.
A private family burial will take place at a later date in City Point, WI. Beste Funeral Home, Mosinee, is assisting the family with arrangements. Online condolences can be directed to the family at www.bestefh.com.
