James "Jim" Hetzel Stevens, Jr., 79, of Cumberland, died Wednesday, January 14, 2026, at UMPC-Western Maryland.
Born March 23, 1946, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late James Hetzel Stevens, Sr. and Kathleen Eulalia (Retzer) Stevens.
He was also preceded in death by his beloved wife, Patricia "Patty" (Croft) Stevens; his brother, Ronald R. Stevens, his sister, Janet Miller, and his sister-in-law, Linda (Byer) Croft.
Jim is survived by his brother-in-law, Charles L. Croft, Jr. and wife Sherry; nieces Lisa Courtney and daughter Aubrey, and Valerie Milburn, husband Rodney, and children Jaxon and Claire.
Jim had worked for the Maryland State Highway Administration doing surveying work. He then worked at the Cumberland Celanese Plant.For 40 years, Jim had been the sexton at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, caring for the church and its members.
Jim grew up in St. Mary's Catholic Church and later belonged to the Shrine of SS. Peter & Paul.
He was a Past Grand Knight of Council #583, Knights of Columbus, and 4th. Degree, Past Faithful Navigator.
Jim enjoyed the children who were in Patty's daycare at their home. During the Christmas holidays, he was known to be Santa Claus for children in the community.
Friends will be received at the Upchurch Funeral Home, P.A., Cumberland, on Tuesday, January 20th from 2-4 PM.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Mary's Catholic Church on Wednesday, January 21st at 10:30 AM, with Rev. Mark Carter, OFM, Cap, celebrant.
Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.
