James Stokes Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Wilkerson Funeral Home and Crematory - Greenville on Dec. 16, 2025.
Mr. James Harvey Stokes, age 82, went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, surrounded by his family on Sunday, December 14, 2025.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 17, at Wilkerson Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, December 18, in the Wilkerson Funeral Chapel, followed by a graveside service at Pinewood Memorial Park.
James, born and raised in Pitt County, graduated from Chicod High School and earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial and Technical Education from East Carolina University.
He was a proud veteran who honorably served his country in both the United States Air Force and the United States Army. James had a remarkable talent for fixing and building just about anything and was truly a jack of all trades, proudly wearing his "Handyman" belt buckle. He found joy in spending time at Emerald Isle, fishing at the Bogue Inlet Fishing Pier, traveling, restoring and showing his prized antique Corvette at car shows, and especially attending his lifelong church, Black Jack Free Will Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, H. J. Stokes and Ruth Stokes, and by his granddaughter, Jamie Stokes.
He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Frances N. Stokes; his son, James Harvey Stokes Jr. and wife, Nancy; his daughter, Maria Stokes Livingston and husband, Josh; his step-granddaughter, Jennifer O'Brien; his step-grandsons, Shane and Thomas Craft; and his brother, Dennis Stokes and wife, Debbie.
The family is deeply grateful to the nurses and staff at Gentiva Hospice, with special thanks to his nurse assistant, Rosa, for their compassionate care over the past year.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Free Will Baptist Children's Home or Black Jack Free Will Baptist Church in James's memory.
