James Wadhams Stuckert, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully on August 7, 2025.
He was preceded in death by his cherished wife of 59 years, Diane Vittitow Stuckert ("Nana"), and his brother, Robert Stuckert.
He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Mathias Stuckert, and a loving family who will carry forward his legacy of kindness, leadership, and joy.
Jim leaves behind his sister, Elizabeth Stuckert Ray and his three children: Steve Stuckert (Carole), Susie Crush (Steve), and Scott Stuckert (Mary); ten grandchildren: Christopher Crush (Sarah), Taylor Hoblitzell (Greg), Kevin Crush (Kate), Daniel Crush, Peri Crush (Kevin Morris), Michael Stuckert, Morgan Stuckert, Catherine Ward (Tyler), Will Stuckert (Gianna), and Sarah Stuckert; and nine great-grandchildren who brought him endless delight.
A native of
Louisville, Kentucky, Jim graduated from St. Xavier High School in 1955 and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (1960) and a Master of Business Administration (1961) from the University of Kentucky. During his time at UK, he served two terms as president of the Kappa Sigma fraternity, beginning a lifelong connection to the university.
Jim began his career as a sales engineer with Cummins Engine Company in Columbus, Indiana. In 1962, he transitioned into the securities industry, joining W.L. Lyons and Company in Louisville. He became a partner in the merged firm J.J.B. Hilliard-W.L. Lyons & Company in 1968 and later served as chairman and CEO of Hilliard Lyons, Inc. from 1995 until 2004. His leadership and vision helped shape the firm's success and reputation.
Beyond his professional achievements, Jim was deeply committed to the University of Kentucky. He served as president of the UK Alumni Association in 1976 and was appointed to the UK Board of Trustees in 2009, where he served as vice-chair and chaired the Finance Committee for five years. Jim's passion for the university was truly unmatched, and his legacy will continue to shape its future for years to come.
While Jim received numerous awards and honors throughout his life, his happiness shined brightest while tailgating in the UK Blue Lot, dancing on a dance floor, hiking in the Tetons, and laughing with friends and family. Being "Poppa" to ten grandchildren and nine great grandchildren meant everything to him, and he was so proud of each and every one of them.
