Richard Mooney Cooper, 87, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 7, 2026 at Nazareth Home, Highlands. He was born June 18, 1938, in Louisville and raised in Louisville's Highlands. He was an active member of St. Martha Catholic Church and was a professed member of the Secular Franciscan Order (OFS), fraternity of Mount St. Francis, Indiana.

Richard was a graduate of Holy Name Grade School, St. Xavier High School, Bellarmine University (BA), and Spalding University (MEd), with additional graduate courses at the University of Louisville.

Mr. Cooper served in the US Army Reserves, achieving the rank of Sergeant First Class. He had a 40-year career as an English teacher and career counselor at DeSales High School and worked for several years as chauffeur for Funeral Auto Company.

In his spare time, Richard had a passion for fishing. Richard was a member of the fishing club at Mt St. Francis and spent many relaxing hours fishing there at the Mount. Richard donated his fishing rod, reels, tackle and equipment to the DeSales Bass Fishing club.

Mr. Cooper is survived by his wife of 28 years, Doris Bronger Cooper and his daughter, Mary Elizabeth Abordo (Enrico) of Kelseyville, CA, three step-children, Bill Boehman (Judith), Karen Deacon, Don Boehman, 5 step-grandchildren, 2 step-great grandchildren, and multiple nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Walter Cooper, Sr. and Hazel Mooney Cooper, and all six of his siblings: Frances Cooper Melecki, Mary Cooper Bauer, Charles Cooper Jr., Martha Cooper Brent, John Cooper, and Robert Cooper.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 10, 2026 from 2pm-8pm at Ratterman & Sons, 3800 Bardstown Road. A funeral Mass in Mr. Cooper's honor will be held 10am Wednesday, March 11, 2026, at St. Martha Catholic Church, 2825 Klondike Lane with burial to follow at Calvary Cemetery.

Expressions of sympathy should be directed to Mt Saint Francis Center for Spirituality or the Nazareth Home.
