James Terry Obituary

January 14, 1935 – July 20, 2025

James Theodore Terry, known to his family and friends as "Jim", passed away peacefully on July 20, 2025, at the age of 90.

Born on January 14, 1935, in Chicago, Illinois, Jim was the son of Theodore and Mary Terry. He graduated from Parker High School in Chicago in 1952 and went on to attend the University of Michigan, where he studied chemistry. Jim built an extraordinarily successful career in the commercial and industrial paint industry before becoming a successful entrepreneur in the importing business.

Jim proudly served his country in the Medical Corps of the Air National Guard and the United States Air Force Reserve, receiving an honorable discharge in 1961.

A man of many interests, Jim was an avid fitness enthusiast and weightlifter and could often be found at the Franklin Athletic Club in Franklin, Michigan outlifting other young men half his age. He was also a skilled woodworker and a passionate art collector, best known for his remarkable bronze sculpture collection. For many years, he coached youth baseball in the City of Birmingham leagues, sharing his love of the game and serving as a mentor to countless young players.

Jim and his beloved wife, Anita (née Karris), were married on June 21, 1964, and celebrated over 60 years of marriage together. They were avid world travelers, visiting numerous countries across almost every continent, often with friends and with the Nomads Travel Club.

Jim is survived by his loving wife, Anita, his beloved sister Frances Vadella (John, deceased), and loving brother Nick Terry (Joanne). He also leaves behind his nieces and nephews: Kathy Nowakowski, Kenneth Vadella, Ted Vadella, Jim Terry, Tina King, and Stephen Terry. He was preceded in death by his niece Pat Terry.

Those who knew Jim will remember him for his warmth, honesty, and quick sense of humor. He was a gifted Greek dancer, a loyal friend, and a man who never turned down a cold Pepsi. His kindness and generosity touched many lives, and his legacy will live on in the hearts of all who loved him.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, July 25, 2025 at 12:00pm at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church 760 W. Wattles Rd. Troy, MI 48098. Visitation begins at the church at 11:30am.

Burial will take place at Franklin Cemetery in Franklin, Michigan.

Those wishing to make an expression of sympathy are asked to consider a donation in Jim's memory to St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church 760 Wattles Rd. Troy, MI 48098.
