James Thomas Obituary

JB was born in Boise, Idaho to Earl and Ardelle Thomas and spent much of his youth in Bethesda, Maryland. He graduated from The University of Idaho and was in the midst of pursuing his Law Degree when Uncle Sam came calling. The Marine Corps took JB around the world during his career, but it was during his recruiting tour in Florida he truly found his greatest love, Susan Osgood. JB and Sue created a relationship that will last beyond this life.
A life dedicated to service, JB was a devoted family man, Marine Aviator, writer and teacher. Upon retiring from the Marine Corps, he embarked on a second career at The Daily News writing and editing for 25 years.
There was no such thing as a stranger to JB, only friends he hadn't yet met.
JB is survived by his loving family which includes his sweetheart and best friend of 51 years, Susan Osgood Thomas, children Jenny Silva (Scott), Jacob "Jake" Wesley Thomas (Kelli), his beloved grandchildren, Caedmon Silva, Logan Silva, Francesca Silva and Abigail Silva. He is also survived by his dear sister Suzi Everton and her beautiful children and grandchildren.
Words cannot convey how deeply he will be missed.
The family will receive friends Tuesday morning, prior to the service, from 10:00 until 11:00 AM at the funeral home.

As a photographer working at The Daily News my camera was always with me at the ready, a practice which often afforded me the opportunity to capture those fleeting and telling moments of the world around me. One afternoon in November 2004 I was passing through the newsroom making my way to the photo lab when I noticed JB leaning over a cubicle partition engaged in conversation with one of the reporters. I couldn't resist making this environment portrait of him. He was in true form, and I assumed he was engaged in a Socratic discussion about politics, which he often enjoyed. Rest well dear friend.
