James Michael Thoms II (Jimmy II) of
Newport News, VA, (age 42) passed away in the early morning of December 11, 2025, due to sudden heart issues. Jimmy II was born in 1983 at St Mary's Hospital in Henrico County, VA. He graduated from Denbigh H.S. (2001) and studied at Virginia Military Institute (2005) in Business / Finance. Jimmy II was a significant contributor to the resurgence of the Denbigh H.S. and VMI Baseball Teams as a pitcher. He also played with The Peninsula Pilots Prospect League in Hampton, VA during the summers.
After "9/11" and graduation Jimmy II served in the United States Marine Corps attaining the rank of Captain. He completed 8 ½ Years of service as World-Wide Logistics Expert. His major duty assignments included Low Altitude Air Defense (LAAD), Marine Air Support Squadron 1, (MASS 1); NATO Training Team Advisor, and Marine Forces Special Operations Command (MARSOC). Significant Awards received: Navy and Marine Corps Commendation 2; Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal; Combat Action Ribbon (Afghanistan); Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation; National Defense Service Medal; Afghanistan Campaign Medal (W/1 Star); Global War on Terrorism Service Medal; Navy Sea Service Deployment Ribbon; NATO Medal-ISAF Afghanistan; Letter of Commendation by CO; Expert Rifleman; and Expert Pistol Shot Medal. Jimmy II was a highly respected Marine Corps Officer who took care of his Marines and accomplished the mission. Upon leaving the service Jimmy II worked in various logistic jobs in Norfolk, VA and Kennesaw, GA.
Jimmy II is survived by his Fiancée, Simona Sochorová. He also leaves behind his parents, Jim & Chris Thoms of
Newport News, VA; his sister, Theresa (Jason) Annis and nieces, Kiersten, Kourtney, and Piper of Chesterfield County, VA. As well as aunts and uncles, Geno (Pat) Bausone of Sutherland, VA; Harry Jr. (Vinnie) Thoms of San Diego, CA; Cindy (Jim) McDonald of Flat Rock, MI; Trudy (Rich) Grantham of Howard County, MD; and Mike Thoms of Wixom, MI.
Preceding Jimmy II in death are his grandparents, Wilson & Mary Moore and Harry Sr. & Joanne Thoms. Also, aunts & uncles, Mary (Red) Bowers, Patricia Bausone, Patricia (Charles) Cox, and Mary Thoms.
He is dearly missed by his family, friends, teammates, and Marines for his caring, encouraging words, humor, and warm spirit. His legacy lives on through the countless lives he touched.

A Funeral Mass will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, December 22, 2025 at St. Jerome Catholic Church by Rev. George Prado with Military Honors. Entombment will take place at St. Jerome Catholic Church Columbarium. A Reception will follow at the Church Fellowship Hall. Arrangements by Weymouth Funeral Home.
