James Tipton Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Sebrell Funeral Home on Mar. 2, 2026.
James Howard "Jim" Tipton, 68, was born March 5, 1957, and passed away February 23, 2026. Jim-known to some as Tipton and to others simply as Tip-was marked by generosity, creativity, and an unwavering dedication to his family and friends.

He was born to his mother, June, who held a meaningful place in his life story. After attending Chamberlain-Hunt Academy and graduating from Murrah High school, he attended Hinds Community College. Jim spent part of his childhood in Laurel, where his family lived for a time with his beloved maternal grandparents. They faithfully took him to the Presbyterian Church there-a church he loved dearly and remembered fondly throughout his life. For many years, Jim and his wife, Marilyn, were members of Trinity Presbyterian Church in Jackson. After moving to Madison, they joined Highlands Presbyterian Church, where they continued their church family life together.

Entrepreneurial by nature, Jim loved creating and building things from a young age. Throughout his life, he found joy in working with his hands-restoring antique boats, carving cypress, gardening, and bringing beauty and craftsmanship to whatever he touched.

For over 40 years before retiring, Jim built a successful career in Telecommunications and Banking Security Sales. Highly competitive and driven, he was never satisfied unless he was the top salesman in the company. Yet beyond professional achievement, he valued relationships most. He treated coworkers and customers like family, forming friendships that lasted far beyond business.

A devoted outdoorsman, Jim found great joy in duck hunting, sailing, fishing, and exploring the beauty of Mississippi from the Delta to the Gulf Coast. He volunteered with Ducks Unlimited and with the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks, assisting with bear and alligator programs. He often said he felt closest to the Lord when he was outdoors, surrounded by the Mississippi landscape he loved so well.

Jim also shared a special bond with his precious dog, Taylor, who was faithfully by his side and brought him constant companionship and joy.

He is survived by his loving wife of 39 years, Marilyn Taylor Tipton, whom he cherished deeply. His family expresses heartfelt gratitude to the staff and medical teams at the University of Mississippi Medical Center for their exceptional care, compassion, and support during the final chapter of his life.

Visitation will be held Thursday, March 5, from 9:30–11:00 a.m., followed by the Memorial Service at 11:00 a.m., at Highlands Presbyterian Church, 1160 Highland Colony Parkway, Ridgeland, MS 39157.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Highlands Presbyterian Church.
