James Tornillo Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Veterans Funeral Care on Jan. 26, 2026.
James Christopher Tornillo, age 95, of Treasure Island, Florida, passed away peacefully on January 13, 2026, at Bay Pines Veterans Memorial Hospital.

James was born on March 15, 1930, in New Jersey. A proud and decorated United States Navy veteran of the Korean War era, he served his country with honor and carried that sense of duty and pride throughout his life.

Following his military service, Jim returned to New Jersey, where he built and operated a successful plant nursery. His hard work and entrepreneurial spirit allowed him to retire at the age of 50-opening the door to a new and joyful chapter of life.

Retirement is when Jim discovered his passion for ballroom dancing. What began as an interest soon became a lifelong love, and for the next 35 years he danced competitively, winning several competitions along the way. Dancing brought him great happiness, community, and purpose.

Above all else, Jim's greatest joy in life was his beloved son, Christopher, who preceded him in death in 2023. Their bond was the deepest and most defining relationship of his life. Also, preceding him in death was his partner of many years Helen. After his son's passing Jim spent the final years of his life with his chosen family Tonya and the many close friends he gained along the way.

Jim will be remembered by all who knew him for his welcoming smile, his gentle nature, and his ever-present kind word. He was deeply devoted to his Catholic faith, which guided him through every stage of his life.

In his final year, Jim was a cherished resident of the Community Living Center at Bay Pines VA. There, he became affectionately known as the "unofficial mayor of CLC-West." A familiar and beloved fixture in the hallway, Jim never let a stranger pass without a greeting or conversation, touching countless lives with his warmth and humanity.

James Christopher Tornillo lived a life defined by service, joy, faith, and connection-and he will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

A committal service with honors will be held on Wednesday, February 11, 2026 at 1:30 PM at Bay Pines National Cemetery, 10000 Bay Pines Blvd., St. Petersburg, FL 33708.
